Default Using NTL/Virgin set top box as cable modem?

Morning all,

A question for those in the know on cable tv/internet! We've had NTL broadband for a while and it's connected via the main NTL socket downstairs in the living room.

We've just had the basic Virgin Media TV package fitted in the bedroom and have been supplied with a Samsung set top box.

Is it possible to bin the stand alone modem now and simply connect the set top box to the PC?

I found I switched to having a stand alone modem even though originally I connected via the set top box because I found the PACE set top box unstable. This was a while a go now but from my experience I would stick with a stand alone modem everytime.

Also if the set top box goes wrong you lose both tv and broadband.

Hope that helps.

Ive heard people say get the cable modem if you can rather than using the set top box, Samsung boxes are supposed to be better than Pace but I've got the separate modem thanfully...

Thanks for the replies

The resounding opinion seems to be DONT DO IT

Does anyone know if it's possible to get some sort of splitter to split my current 1 cable outlet upstairs into 2 outlets for tv and internet?

Adding to say - Phoned virgin media this morning on a whim to give my opinion that the package I'm on doesn't seem competitive when reviewed against something like Sky see/speak/surf.

I was paying £34.99 a month for 2mb broadband, basic digital tv, and weekend free calls but I'm now paying £25 a month for 10mb broadband (increasing to 20mb in May) and the same tv/phone package.

So that's an 18mb speed increase for £10 less a month

The Set top box does contain a modem, but your internet will not be provisioned to work with it. Also the set top box can only support up to 1mb connection !

A splitter on the coax cable would work fine.
