Question PC Power supplies

I think I need a new PSU for my box, its runnin Gigabyte K8NPro mobo, socket 754, 3 HDD's, 2 DVD's, AGP geforce 7800GS, Amd64 3400+ and 1gig, will be 2gig of ram soon.

What would ppl recommend? 400W-530W? My current PSU 400W seems to be the weak link in Vista when the gfx are under load, causing bsods. My 3.3v and 12v rails are stable but the 5v, -5v and -12v rails are all over the shop, would this cause this kind of issue? XP is totally stable however on the desktop.
Also gaming (either XP or vista) it sometimes suffers with lockups, blue screen, or display goes into standby. Sometimes can play for hours with no issue. My temps are fine, RAM checks out ok, so assuming the vid card isn't getting enough juice from the PSU under load.

These ATX2.0, 2.1, 2.2 etc psus, are these compatible with normal ATX mobos?

Budget of £50 should be enough?

Thx.

I would budget for around £60-£65 and be looking at around 500W.
I'm running a very similar set up with one of these.

I have a nice Seasonic PSU 500W around the £60 mark. Very very quiet.

Ah I was actually looking at that one earlier, cheers. So no stability issues for you in gaming?

It has a 20 and 4 pin connectors?

Yes it is rock solid and quiet as well. My one has a 24 pin connector but the last four pins are on a separate connection which can be unclipped if not required.
It happily runs 3 sata hard drives, 2 optical drives, Athlon64 3700+ cpu, 2Gb ram, sound card and AGP vga card (GeForce 7800GS+ then Radeon X1950 Pro).
If you can get a Seasonic one for a similar price I would also look at them too as they also have a very good rep.

It might advertise it as that output but cheap power supplies can only peak at that, they cannot sustain it reliably. It's just advertising bull.

First of all, BSODs are usually down to RAM issues, rather than PSU. Power supply problems usually result in random shutdowns and reboots. Although this is by no means a concrete law.

Second, I'd expect a good 400W to be able to run that rig, but not a bad one.

Third, do you plan to upgrade later? If so, get a 650W or more, SLI-ready and ATX 2.2. If not, then 500W (if a good one) is fine. You can't go wrong with Antec INMSHO.

Yeh I know that, but my RAM checks out fine. Like I said rig is uber stable until I start to put the graphics under load. It use to do the same, although worst with an ATi X1950XT card to.

My current 400W psu is by Mercury, I think it might be cacka

Like daz says, 400 - 650 Watt cheapos can max out at the aforementioned speeds, but have low amp rails and most 600 watts that I have on the shelf at £12 actually run at 285W constant

The best value would be something like a 530watt Hiper PSU at about £45 or if you have the cash a coolermaster 700watt for about £78.

Both have Sli cabling, SATA cabling and are modular so there are no excess cables hanging around and all leads are neatly braided.

It is a quality psu but if I was buying one for myself now I would futureproof a bit more & get something around 600w.

if your going to be running a half decent gfx card then you need something 500w+ with at least 30a on the 12v rails,if not more.
a 650w qtec powersupply for instance will only be runnig maybe 300w max constant and may not even have as much as 25a on the 12v rails.
whereas a decent brand i.e HiperPower 535w will have easy 32a+.dont be tempted to buy a cheapo one with supposed high wattage its a con.
buy a decent brand name.
