Default Windows XP Loading problem

Last night my virus stopper found a virus and removed then told me to restart so I did

Now my desktop and star menu dont load - Although I can access a number of files and programmes via task manager/file/new task

Internet Explorer seems to have gone missing (so I'm using my BT software to do this) - not sure about anything else yet
I'm not sure how to get at system restore as normally I would have gone through the start menu

Any advice is appreciated (although not the throw it out of the window option please guys)

System restore......Start menu - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore, then you can restore to an earlier date but run the virus scan afterwards they have a tendency to tag onto restore files, good luck

Don't think that will help him as his start menu isn't there...

This is the propertied that comes up when I right click on my System Restore button...

Hopefully it will point you in the right direction...

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

%SystemRoot%\ = (normally) c:\windows\

Ady.

Thanks for the help guys
Its no having any of it

Set up a new user as I can access everything through Task Manager and I've got Icons and start menu back

Gonna have to spend a few days trying to get everything set up again the way I want it but at least its working

Think I'm gonna leave the old user on just incase I need to access anything or find a way to get it working again

I had this same problem.

Only my desktop loaded but i couldnt do anything with it bar the run command.

Think in the end i re installed service pack 2 via dos.

That fixed it.

Hope this helps.

Wot about F11 on startup, that takes me to the system restore function on my PC. Failing that just restart and choose a different function key each time to see what they all do on your system.

or startup in safe mode and do a system restore from there?

With no start menu button you can access it by powering up, as soon as the windows xp logo appears on screen power off.

When you next boot the machine up safe mode will be an option.

You could of tried explorer.exe from task manager/run to get access to the start menu and system restore, nevermind.

While you have the chance image your system with Ghost! Only takes 40mins to restore a 10GB partition.

Thats what I was going to suggest the explorer file. If you can run programs this should work ok.

Thanks for all the help guys

Its being a little **** and not having any of it - Not sure if I should delete the old user or not - I really dont want the problem to transfer itself over to the other user I've set up and as I cant find what caused the problem to start with I've got no way of preventing it from doing anything

Anyone know how to 'restore factory settings' if you've not got a system recover option? (machine is a Dell Dimension 5150C)

I'm not at this point yet but with the way its going.......
