Default 32 or 64 bit?

How can I tell if my PC will run Vista 64 bit?
I've looked at the system info, but it just says what the OS is.
It's a Pentium 4 3GHz with Hyper threading or whatever (not DUO)

Also with Vista, if my wireless modem is set up ok, shouldn't my wireless enabled laptop detect it? Is there a decent idiot's guide somewhere?

cheers

If it's a p4 then it's 32bit. As far as the modem is concerned, it all depends on whether you have vista drivers for your wireless hardware. If you have, then yes it should pick it up.

I've just read that it's the same software anyway, just a different license (and a few pence different). So that's pointful then...

Erm, not it's not. The 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista are quite different internally...

64 bit memory registration allows you to run 32gb of ram for a start

go to the microsoft website and download the program that checks if your system is compatible with Vista.

If you have a 64-bit chip but can only get 32-bit drivers for some of your hardware you can start on 32-bit and switch to 64-bit later without needing a new license. XP had a separate 64-bit version – and a 32-bit Pro version, Pro version, a Home Version, a tablet version and a media centre version. Vista still has five SKUs - two home, two business versions and has an Ultimate edition which contains all the features of both, but it allows for things like a tablet PC which is used at home with media functions.

The 64 bit version not only has different code (for a start it's compiled for 64bit processors instead of 32bit ones), but it allows for larger ram installs, and also the internal security systems are a lot more secure / thorough.

The 64 bit version will not install on a 32bit machine, however you can install the 32bit version on a 64bit machine.

I have a dual core laptop, AMD mobile Turion 64, so will that run Vista 64 bit, its 32 at the moment and would I notice a blind bit off difference, its got a gig of ram at the moment, will order some more soon but I think it will only go to 2gb anyway.

As I already said, internally the 32bit and 64bit versions are different. Especially where access to the kernel etc is concerned.

From the same website...

Q. What's the situation with anti-virus software? We understand that the system kernel has been locked from access, so that anti-virus software writers can't access it to protect the system.
A. First of all the changes only affect the 64-bit version, not the 32-bit. Even then it doesn’t affect all AV software...

It's unlikely you'll notice any difference between 32 and 64bit unless you use it for processor intensive stuff (like 3d rendering, video editing etc). 32bit will run fine...

Is that a vista limitation?

64bit memory allocation lets you run access 16TB of RAM.

True enough. Pretty confusing statement about the versions though.
Anyway, I'm, pretty sure I'm 32 bit, which suits fine!

No, but no gaming motherboard will run any more, you'd be onto server motherboards for that
