Can someone decipher this ADSL speed test for me please?
We switched to Zen a few weeks ago and at first the Speedtest.net result was:
3/11/2007 9:43 AM GMT 1.88 Mb/s 0.36 Mb/s 111 ms Dublin ~ 200 mi
This weekend I found the internet was really slow and ran a few more tests, this was typical of them:
3/17/2007 5:39 PM GMT 0.13 Mb/s 0.34 Mb/s 116 ms Dublin ~ 200 mi
This morning it's come up as this:
I know we're a long way from the exchange but I can't understand why the initial speed was so good and now it's right down. The connection drops out quite frequently but unplugging and plugging back in the wireless router seems to do the trick.
Before I ring Zen and make a right numptie of myself I'd like some pointers from you lot
Cheers
Sal

Are your MTU settings high enough ? In your router what noise levels do you have ?
Do you have good quality ADSL filter on all telephone connections ?
Do you use a telephone cord extension to connect and is it the main box you plug into ?

Blimey that was quick Lightning by name, lightning by nature
A quick look in the router shows the speeds as this: DSL Speed 448 Kbps Upstream, 1792 Kbps Downstream.
The MTU setting says 1400 bytes (I used the settings Zen gave me).
I don't know where the noise levels are
The ADSL filter I fitted is a good one but the other one was already here when we moved in a few weeks ago - I'll go and change it for one of mine.
The main box is upstairs, the router is plugged into a shortish telephone extension that was already here, it's approx 3 metres at the most.
Cheers

Try gradually increasing the MTU settings, up to a max of 1500, sometimes 1492 is a router limiting factor.
1458 according to Zen's website if you are having issues

when you say connection drops do you mean internet connection or wireless connection to the router. What are your line stats? Possibly a stuck IP profile, I use an MTU of 1458 with Zen which works a treat.
What are your router stats
::. Kitz - Get your adsl line stats .::
can you plug it into the master socket if it isn't already

5.39pm = primetime.that could have a bearing on your speed on the 2nd test,a lot of ISP use Traffic shaping around the 5-11pm marks and at weekends.due to high volumes of internet traffic, and the amount of P2P bandwidth ****** like myself downloading at 800k/s.Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed is a good speedtest,it has shown my speed as low as 80k/s before, but at 1am it will hit full whack. if you download TCp Optimizer it will help you sort out your MTU etc

Since looking on here last I've been on the phone to Zen which in hindsight I should've done in the beginning as they've been excellent! They can see that there's a problem which may be with the line, in which case they have to contact BT to put it right. Before they can do this I have to do some boring stuff like restore the router to its factory settings etc etc and set it all up from the master socket. They will then check again from their end and see if it's my equipment or the line. My guess is that it's the line but what do I know?
All I do know is that Zen said that the connection keeps dropping which means that the something something isn't getting a something which isn't doing a something else
I'm no PC expert as you can tell Thanks for all your help
