The engineer that installed my new equipment the other day said the 20Mb trials have been completed and where successful, so the packages are changing to the following.
10Mb --> 20Mb
4Mb --> 8Mb (but did say this might be 10Mb)
2Mb --> 4Mb (and this 5Mb)
Think NTL will love advertising 'full 8Mb broadband' now that the ADSL people cant and have to use 'upto'
10Mb is plenty fast enough for me so if they all do double ill be downgrading to the £25 package, especially once my half price deal of £17.50 runs out for the 10Mb.

What's the speed and retention like on the NTL nntp server like these days?
It used to be pretty bad, and up/down all the time - so I now subscribe to Newshosting.com - but if NTL is any good now I'll drop the subs to Newshosting (as it's $15 a month for unlimited).... but I can get a solid 10Mb from Newshosting (if I have 20 concurrent connections, which they moan at me about!)
Anyone using NTL news servers care to comment?
- Oh, and it looks like the 10Mb -> 20Mb upgrade will happen in June. All customers in a previous Telewest area should get the full 20Mb, whereas those in the technically inferior ex NTL area will get "at least 16Mb".

I saw your post but as Pimmo is the man on the inside, he's the one to remove the "should" that you made in your statement.

Im using a company called astraweb (news.astraweb.com - Usenet News Server - Unlimited Downloads - $10/month) for my nntp access, Im on their Unlimited DSL package, unlimited downloads, 20 connections, 68 days retention (says this on their website but some groups are upto 75 now) $15 a month.
And i only need 6 or 7 connections to max out my 10Mb line (so i have 8 just to make sure!!). never drops below 1.1MB/Sec when downloading
EDIT TO ADD: been using astraweb for 18 months now and never had any complaints from them.

I use NTL newsgroups all the time.
When I was on 10meg BB for the last 6 months of last year, I constantly got the full 10meg dl speeds with 4 connections.
They had a couple of blips with the servers, but they were usually fixed within a couple of days. Retentions seem to be about 10 days on their servers too. All in all, not bad for free (well, included in the price of the BB for the pedants).
Only problem is, now that they have dropped the Sky channels, if someone wanted to dl the shows they have lost, such as 24, Lost, Nip/Tuck etc, NTL don't provide access to the relevant newsgroups for these shows. So someone might have to pay a seperate subscription to another newsgroup provider if they wanted to get these groups.

For all you people that are still paying £35 a month for 10mb....
Ring them up and threaten to go to sky. (i.e their max package for £10 a month) they dont have to know that your not really a sky customer even though i am.
I did and have been paying £17.50 since september.
No tie-ins or end date on the price, as i had their top BB package for over 2 years. Takes a bit of patience as you'll get passed around, but well worth it.
Now its even better news since i'll now get 20mb for that price.
