Avast! is probably the best free one, and it is a little better than mediocre. NOD32 is the best paid-for AV.

I have installed and removed Norton many, many times and never had any problems.

When removing it, be sure to use their own removal tool and all will be well...

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

It's not a case of issues, it's the fact that AVG (the free version anyway) isn't very good at detecting viruses. And if that is the only tool you used then you might well have an infected computer and simply not be aware of it...

My computer runs fine, internets fine, games, programs.. as I said no issues

That's right. Stick your head in the sand and it'll all be alright

A lot of modern viruses don't have any visible effect on the computer itself. They just sit there quietly in the background, harvesting personal information and broadcasting it to the internet etc. You might never know they are there. AVG is proven to be not very good at picking these up, and so is not a reliable antivirus at all.

NOD32 is great, and seeing as it is only £24 a year for the subscription it amazes me that people are willing to risk their personal data to save such a small amount of money...

I have Vista, there is no software in the back ground, I monitor my netstat and run a firewall, I also have spybot, windows defender and ad-aware..

My computer is sqeaky clean, I'd bet the Scooby on it

Vista is not a garauntee of virus protection. Firewalls, netstat, spybot, windows defender and ad-aware do not stop viruses (or even necessarily indicate their presence) either.

Most modern viruses do not advertise themselves, (in fact they do their best to stay hidden). I presume you have analysed all your running processes, and know exactly what each one does?

Even if your computer is squeaky clean, how do you know you won;t get infected tomorrow. AVG won't stop it...

Oh, and to you too....

Another vote for Nod 32 , been running it for over a year now absolutely no problems , and actually speeds the computer up as opposed to running NAV.
As already been said whats 20 quid for a bit of piece of mind .

lots of the modern viruses (the really nasty ones) are based on the Sony DRM model. . . once they are on, you can't see em.

Really
Honest, I was on all day getting rid of it. If it wasn't for Swiss helping me, I would probably still be doing it now. I am surprised at how fast my laptop is now, since Norton has gone
I'm getting a strange message though, every time I log on microsoft pops up an error report, Norton blah blah is encountering problems. Err, yes, it has gone from my machine.

I've been having a long drawn out "discussion" with Norton about their latest 2006 version. My mum bought it for her pc but neither her nor myself could get it working properly. After several weeks of frankly terrible tech support, I finally managed to get a refund for her. I've now installed Nod32 (for half the price of Norton) on her machine and it worked first time, it uses a fraction of the system resources, it's quicker, and it does better in the independent tests. I've vowed never to touch a Norton (or McAfee who I've had similar issues with) product ever again...

I'm in the process of buying 2 new computers and was thinking of the free AVG and windows defender as that is what is currently being used but now having second thoughts...does Nod32 work with Vista and would that be £20 odd quid per computer as we have 6 in the house at the moment.
AND I also use Billeo for password and user information at the moment is this really ok or I'm I just being lazy and opening myself upto abuse.
