How do i tell the VP shes a dozy moo
or is there legit problems with mailboxes over vpn?
shes been sending email via vpn and a months worth of email she reckons she 'sent' have gone. The mailbox limit was exceeded but didnt get any msg saying so has been merrily 'sending' away. Shes receives ok but not sending so i cleared it out. theyre not in sent or outbox or in the exchange msg tracking. Where do these emails go?

Maybe an offline cache? Have a look on her laptop for an ost file (assuming Outlook)
Everything is classed as offline until the point it hits the server to send, then it be a sent message.

Just tell her it's an ID10T or PEBKAC error, which happens to be a fatal unrecoverable error requiring complete replacement of the faulty unit

whats a PEBKAC error? i'll stick with the YADM error
either shes a numnut or its system error. ive been steering around the system side so not to call her in a roundabouttechysortofaway thats shes a nonce but by doing that she thinks they are recoverable so i could possibly do something about it....

If the mailbox is full you cannot send or receive messages from Exchange either from Outlook or OWA ! I think from OWA the messages dont go anywhere, they will just disappear ! If using Outlook they will store on the machine in Outbox, have you checked her OWA outbox ? just in case ?

at leat she can send em!!! our poxy it bumch lock the system, so you have to delete !!!!!!!!! files to be able to send emails...
and to make matters worse, they wont allow us to create pst files to store / archive stuff...
they say use archive which is crap!!!
a) it wont archive (see the pst ) problem
b) you have to load the archive in and out everytime you want to use it..
we need to access it instantly if needed...
dont you just love it depts who dont work with the real world

PST are a bad idea (from an IT person).
You have no idea where they are so when something goes wrong and users complain they've lost e-mails and there is no way they can be restored because they are not a server and do not get backed up and then we get it in the neck as we have no control of our users

Our place has a continual battle with our 3500 users over Outlook/Exchange and archiving. We limit mailboxes to 100mb and have Symantec KVS Enterprise as the archiving solution. Its there for a reason and works fine but users think they can just ignore using it 3500 users with unmanageable pst files would be a nightmare

have put users into groups, the plebs and the vips. The plebs who have smaller storage can manage & organise their email. The vips whom have 10times have no clue & keep filling it up & demanding more. Open your wallets & pay for it & youll get it...

In my old workplace, the MD had a 15 gb exchange folder. . . .
For some reason he insisted on e-mailing the applications from our "install share" to himself so he could install them on his other work machine. . . . .
/bangs head
My current MD has 3 x PST backup files of archived e-mails for the last 8 years - rarely accessed tho.
You try to educate people about the best way of storing data, but that's it.
I've never thrown my toys out of the pram over it. I've just made sure I've got it in writing advising them about the potential problems . . . . and the costs of the storage solution.

Uni where I work users are limited to 50 meg inboxes. We make PST's for our users when we set up the machine on their server space which is not ideal but at least way they get backed up and we can find them easily. If they get over 500 meg in size we take them off the server (SAN is low on space and corruption as mentioned), make a CD of the PST and store it locally, then make them another PST on the server for them. Not many people need this and cope with just the one, others are too lazy to read mail and never delete mails, they just dump over to the PST.

At an old company we had a new IT manager that started to look at properly backingup mail. Not sure if he was justt changing things or starting from scratch .... anyhow, his solution was to back up from the exchange server. No problem except for one user who had a 4GB+ 'deleted items' folder. WTF .......?? He hadn't emptied it from the time he had started at the company (10+ years before) and didn't want to 'as he was always retrieving old mails .....'. The IT guy told him that that folder would be on his own machine and it would be his responsibility to back up ... Toys, prams, throw - rearrange to figure out how he took the news!!!

if your going to offer an archive solution, then it must be instantanious...
whenever we need to go through old mails looking for data, or authorisation, which the customer denies sending, we need to do it there and then, not wait for (our / any ) IT dept to give it the old.... the archive will be loaded tommorow / next week / next month .. delete as appropriate!!
hence the need for the pst. files.... and were not talking 3500 users, were talking one 4 man dept, who need to store any communication between customers / suppliers...
half the probs we encounter now, is due to stuff not being kept, and word of mouth conversations of events that took place years ago...
if we had the emails, we could confirm what was or wasnt said!!!
so come on you i.t. guys, your meant to be the hot shots... suggest a solution that works, not your idea of what you want or you think is best for you.

(and i,m not having a pop, just looking for some viable alternatives to the crap we haveto put up with)
