Default ANTI VIRUS PROTECTION Info Request

What is better, Avast 4Home Edition (Free) or McAfee (£2.49 per month). Not worried about cost, just protection. Any others worth getting?

You won't find good and free in the same package.

Also consider NOD 32 and Kaspersky.

Use search as this has been done to death

Also look at AVG - I've used this for a while now with no problems at all (and it's free)....

This has been done to death on here. AVG is not a good antivirus. Fact. End of story. There have even been reports on here recently of people who have been infected whilst having it installed.

No free product currently available even comes close to the protection offered by NOD32 etc. McAfee isn't bad on the dectection rates, but it is bloated and badly eats resources

Do yourself a favour, and spend a little money (it's only £30 for a whole year - less than most games).

As above I wouldn't touch AVG with a bargepole.

There ARE good free antivirus products available though.

Kaspersky is currently free, as per my link above.

Avira AntiVir is also free. Very small footprint and one of the best in detection rates, even frequently topping NOD32.

Have they improved then? The last time I looked at those, (admittedly about a year ago), they didn't seem much better than AVG, (especially looking at the web forums and seeing the number of people with problems related to those products)...

Both always appear high in the rankings I've read and I've never had problems with either product. I guess its personal opinion though.
