It's very good for doing the basics (and it's free, so you can't really complain), but I don't think Adobe is quaking in their boots either! Photoshop is a complex program - it takes a fair bit of time to get to know how to use all the features - but it has got an awful lot of features, which is why so many pros use it.

Picasa is dead easy to use, but it is limited. It would also depend on what version of PS you are comparing it with.

Picasa - good image browser, but no competitor to photoshop. Ideal for your granny though.

I'd consider Picasa more a photo organisation tool rather than image editing, although I know it does the basics. Useful tool for free.
