Question PC radio broadcast - legal?

My stepson wants to start his online radio broadcast using Shoutcast or something! Apparently all his mates are doing it! My wife and I have told him that he'll be breaking copyrights etc, anyone got the info about the legal side of this?

He reckons he can download songs and then broadcadst them without breaking any laws.

Andy.

Defo breaking copyright; you can't even make a backup copy of a CD you've bought, let alone broadcasting it to others...

Hello

No it is illegal, but to be honest the 3 people that are going to listen to it it really doesn't matter.

broadcasting music is not illegal as such so long as it is below a certain power range, for example, I can broadcast the music on my PC to my stereo in the living room without breaking laws. I am sure the people in my immediate vacinity can receive the signal. I am not sure how this is viewed illegal if only a few people within a hundred or so meters can receive the signal as long as the music is legally yours?

It's deffinately illegal. A friend of mine DJ's over the net, and he has to write his track list down after each set so that the appropriate royalties can be payed.

As above. If you don't pay royalties it's breaking the law, if your intention is to 'broadcast'.
