Default Blu-Ray is dead, long live HD-DVD

Sony just keep on shooting themselves in the foot:

Celebs & Gadget Gossips!

They are not allowing their format to be used for **** - LMFAO, thats what killed Betamax!

im guessing by having 5 out of 8 studios exclusive to blueray this may help to end HD. if people are going to want a film theyre going to have to buy blueray. Ill be getting HD as there are far better titles available than the majority of pap thats going to be on BR.

What kind of losers watch **** DVDs anyway?

In this day and age there is a much better variety available online and no risk of anyone finding your stash.

Well that all depends on whether you've got your PC linked up to your 50" plasma

Realistically there's more chance of someone finding it on your PC than on a shelf at home

just been reading up on HD vs Blu-ray back in 2005

No matter how much is said about the data capacity the winning format will be the one p0rn industry goes with. The BluRay has far too many big companies backing it, that might lead to the format being under corporate control too much

Sounds like the same as VHS vs BETA war. Back then it was the p0rn industry that tipped the balance in favour of the VHS format because the company that was backing BETA didn't want any adult content to be produced and sold on his format.

I think the P0rn vote or the industry studios is a bit of a smoke screen.

The winner will be the fromat that gets a sub 100 quid player in tescos.

as a 360 owner I have the HD drive now and I can't fault it. Most reviews I read say the HD dvd is better and some of the studios that were for blue ray have now started producing both formats

It supports all BR features, but not all HD features, most peeps might think that a bit odd but even Toshiba's (main HD backer) HD drive doesnt even support all its features yet - and people are talking the pi55 out of Sony for incomplete codecs...

Well done to LG though for having the ***** to do it - only thing now is for Sony to make one so that you dont have to own one that looks like its been made by Blu Peter.

(see what I did there?)

Shame about MD really - the sound was a digital version of vinyl really warm. All to do with the ATRAC encoding.

Shame

I never had any skipping or jumping with my old car cd autochanger. Using an ipod instead now though. Much easier than constantly changing cds

This is Sony....theyll shoot themsleves in the foot one way or another.

The plus for Blu-Ray is that it's all those PS3's.

But If I had to bet, I'd back HD-DVD

I have a MD walkman and a home player. It was never an accepted format like cassette or the cd was. It was mainly a recording format, and it was hardly supported by the record companies with prerecorded discs.

True, and I don't listen to the ipod at home, but it doesn't make much difference in the car

Agreed. Whilst it is true that VHS was successful due to porno's it was different back then, there was no existing way to watch movies at home. The adult industry is like any other and they will target the biggest user base which certainly for the next couple of years will be traditional DVD.

I mainly listen to itunes while working music sounds better through the computer than it does through the ipod, even though I invested in a set of the uprated sennheiser ear buds from Apples site - they are a massive improvement over the standard buds, but still not as good as the old MD.

If you look around AV Forums, most audiophiles tend to agree that a Sony ATRAC player is better than an iPod, it may be desirable and easy to use but its music playback seems to leave a lot to be desired.

I listen to mine at work, and it sounds fine, but then I pump it through a pair of £150 Senheiser headphones (I think that's roughly what I paid for them a couple of years ago). I've listened to an MD and considered getting one, but for me the 60gb capacity of the iPod outweighed the quality increase of the MD.

If I want to listen to something at home, I stick in the cd

As for the dvd formats, I wouldn't like to put money on either of the formats at the moment. I reckon it'll be at least the summer before we get an idea of who is winning (just by comparing the number of titles available for each format).
