Which graphics card for gaming with VGA output, £200max?
Hi all,
I'm currently running an ATI X1600SE 256/512 Radion and want to upgrade.
All the new gen cards seem to have dual DVI outputs.
I need one with VGA output.
Edited to add.
PCI-E, 16X
Any ideas?
Cheers

This month's PC Format mag has a graphics card roundup, I'll have a look and post when I get back.
Afaik they will come with a dvi to vga adaptor so no worries there.

At the min, it is the best out there. Especially if your on a VGA. The new batch 8800 & R600, when the do come will be awesome, but expensive. And the mutts nutts if you have a monitor the size of a house to show it off.
My monitor max res is 1280 x 1024. The x1950pro plays all games at the res with no probs, Need for speed all the way.

My laptop is a good spec but crap with games so I dont bother.
My PC is very good spec apart from the Graphics Card (Core2Duo6400, 2gig Ram etc), monitor is a 19" Philips widescreen at 1440X900 but VGA only.
I can just about manage Doom3 on medium quality at 1024X768 but NFS Carbon struggles along at medium quality at 800X600.
I'll have a look round for deals on the X1950Pro
Cheers

Go Nvidia over ATi, so your looking at a 7950GT, about 170-220 quid, 512mb, pci-e, also direct 10X compatable
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Bottom one for 211 quid, if you can stretch to the 11.25 extra its worth it (got one and it runs great ) but it is dvi (dual) and my monitor runs great with the adaptor on it

X1950Pro certainly looks the best at the moment, and should tide you over until DX10 becomes necessary etc.
ps nothing apart from Nvidia 8000 series are DX10 at the moment...

Pound for pound, the X1950 Pro is by far the best card. Not worth spending more than £150 when DX10 cards will be required for the next generation of games.

Just because you can install DX10 software onto the PC doesn't mean it can do DX10 effects.
I'd still be using my TNT2 Ultra if that were the case

For the price it does seem the ATI X1950Pro offers near high end performance for mid-range price.

Another question then.
What power connection is on these higher spec cards?
I have spare large connectors for DVD/CD drives etc and a spare small power connector for floppy drive etc.
Cheers

They have the 6-pin PCI-E power plug which can deliver alot more power than the standard 4-pin Molex which you have spare.
You can get adaptors (some cards are supplied with them) like these though which allows you to use two 4-pin Molex to power a PCI-E socket.
The new nvidia 8800 cards require 2 x PCI-E plugs
