Cheapest DivX DVD player.......
Hi All,
Any recomendations on which DVD players will recognise/play DIVX avi format files?
I run with 2 old DVD players currently; neither support it. Means I have to convert any avi files from computer into DVD format before being able to play them elsewhere.
Second question: is it *only* players that advertise DIVX compatibility that support it? Or do newer players that can read DVD-RW/+RW also support this format?
For example; Dixons are selling off the Philips DVP3020 for 30 quid in UK (~50 Euro here in Dublin), but this only supports movies on DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW. The Philips DVP642 is US$46 on Amazon.com, but specifically mentions DIVX format support.
Thanks, all this stuff is new technology to me......

May not be the cheapest out there but a modded Xbox with XBMC installed (Free) is an awesome divx DVD player. Even better if you link it to your PC and just stream the files stright to it so no need for the DVD's at all.

Hello
Only ones that specifically mention DivX will support it. To be honest, I'd probably buy an old Xbox, modify it and there you have a great DVD player along with any movie format you can throw at it.

Thanks - can I modify any Xbox to play all formats? What does a cheap one cost nowadays?
I'm currently wiring up my main TV to the PC graphics card using svideo connection so I can play direct downstairs. Above was for upstairs TV.
On the svideo connection; I have a Sapphire ATI X800GTO2 card - am currently having problems getting video to display on TV; I *think* the svideo cable is faulty. Is displaying output from svideo as simple as enabling the second adapter on my PC?
Thanks, Richard

XMBC is a dashboard you load on the the Xbox. it boots to it. you can then just play files on your PC in your shared folder or access a DVD which has the Divx files on. It will play pretty much any file you throw at it and more are added all the time as they are still improving XBMC.
info here.
XBMC - Xbox Media Center
Xbox Media Center - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XboxMediaCenter is a free open source (GPL) multimedia player for the Xbox™ from Microsoft. Currently XboxMediaCenter can be used to play/view most common video/audio/picture formats such as MPEG-1/2/4, DivX, XviD, MP3, AAC, JPG, GIF plus many more less known formats directly from a CD/DVD in Xbox DVD-ROM drive or of Xbox hard-drive, XBMC can also stream files from a PC over a local network and even stream media streams directly from the internet. XBMC has playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast and many audio visualizations. All these features enable the Xbox™ running XboxMediaCenter to fully function as a multimedia jukebox. XBMC is easy to install and use, it's very convenient and flexible plus offers a great price/performance ratio. XBMC is of also course completely free of any adware or spyware. (This, The XboxMediaCenter Project is also known as "Xbox Media Center" or simply "XBMC"). Note! XBMC is a hobby project that is only developed by volunteers in their spare-time for free. (Remember that XboxMediaCenter does require a modded Xbox to run on or it will not function).

I've personally been toying with the Philips DVP5960, has a usb slot in the from so i can just whack my movies on my external hard drive or usb stick and play them straight from there. More expensive at £62
Currys - Shop for DVD Players - Philips DVP5960 High Definition Equivalent DVD Player
Or there's the 3040 a bit cheaper without the usb at Around £42
Buy DVP3040 DVD/DIVX review DVP3040 DVD/DIVX discount cheapest UK shop
The philips players seem to play everything chuicked at them, according to the dvd geek forums, including xvid which some don;t
The USB slot is going to be the clincher for me though.. i download a lot of tv shows and only want to watch them once, so hate having to waste time and money on blank dvd's

Thanks All - Xbox seems the way forward, but I'm completely green when it comes to consoles (always relied on my PC to play games....).
SwS (or anyone who knows) - a couple more questions, if you don't mind;
- Can I buy any non-360 Xbox console (I have not seen a modded one for sale yet....but I assume some that are sold will be modded anyhow)
- By 'Modding', I assume we are talking about fitting a modchip to bypass the Xbox native BIOS? Are these still readily available? (my company has now blocked internet search engine queries with the words 'modchip'.....or divx...lol!)
- By default the xbox came with a hard drive? What size?
- Can I then upgrade this hard disk, and can I copy games directly onto the hard disk and launch them from there? I hate fiddling with dame disks.....
- How does XMBC interact with normal Xbox functionality? If I boot to it, is there then an option to load a normal Xbox game?
Thanks again, and sorry for all the dumb questions......

I've supplied a number of these to mates after getting one myself.
H&B DVD/DIVX DX-3255 review cheap prices DVD/DIVX DX-3255 H&B best buy discount online uk shop
All play every file type attempted so far.... no problems whatsoever and good connectivity to external audio etc.
TBH much easier than buying and modding an XBox IMHO.

You could buy any and mod it but I would look for one with a mod chip already fitted. Saves you the hassle of fitting and they will probably already have a dashboard installed.
- By 'Modding', I assume we are talking about fitting a modchip to bypass the Xbox native BIOS? Are these still readily available? (my company has now blocked internet search engine queries with the words 'modchip'.....or divx...lol!)
Yes that's what it generally means. You can also 'softmod' the original xbox which uses a software exploit to flash a modified bios. With most new modchips though you can switch them on and off.
- By default the xbox came with a hard drive? What size?
Yes it did. 8 or 10 GB but with a modchip and right BIOS you can put 137GB+ in if you so wish.
- Can I then upgrade this hard disk, and can I copy games directly onto the hard disk and launch them from there? I hate fiddling with dame disks.....
Yes you can. You rip the game to the HD and run it from there.
- How does XMBC interact with normal Xbox functionality? If I boot to it, is there then an option to load a normal Xbox game?
Seamlessly. You can set it to auto-boot games or you can start them from within XBMC. If you can turn the modchip off then the Xbox will run as standard.

Not dumb questions at all mate. I asked the same ones when I did mine.

There may well be an easier and cheaper way but the Xbox is a very good solution IMHO.

Thanks Russ....but I gotta' be honest, the idea of the Xbox is pretty persuasive assuming I can get one cheap. Reasons: I can play games on it too, and (using the house LAN) I can simply browse to the Divx files on my home PC so no need to burn anymore DVD's

Cheers SwS - sounds good. No one advertises the Xbox as modified via eBay, all very nudge-nudge, wink-wink! I'll contact a few and ensure I pick one up with what I need already.
Thanks Again, Richard

It has Evo X which is a dashboard so it is either chipped or soft modded. I'm sure the seller could confirm which.
eBay.co.uk: Modded Xbox with over 100 top games (item 170066864325 end time 04-Jan-07 08:39:07 GMT)
eBay.co.uk: XBOX Console Modded With Evolution X And 12 Games (item 230073724212 end time 06-Jan-07 14:16:25 GMT)
expensive
eBay.co.uk: Modified Crystal XBOX!! Games! (item 300065078287 end time 03-Jan-07 16:10:54 GMT)
Hints at been modded due to the bit about hard drive space.
eBay.co.uk: Xbox Console + 17 Games + Extra Controllers + Remote (item 270073203499 end time 03-Jan-07 20:30:00 GMT)
call this one gut instinct but worth an email to check

Thanks Dave - does it really cost 35 quid to chip it? MrModChips (link above) is selling the Xecuter 2.6 CE for UKP19.50.

I got mine from a fellow S'Netter Ninnybobs from the NBO a few years back
It was already chipped, so I gave him a few extra quid
I put a bigger hard drive in it, got XBMC, and a Dolby Digital TOS Link Cable with S-Video output, and watch everything on the Xbox now through a projector and 7 foot screen
