win98 authentication problem
Mate at work is having trouble authenticating his real version of win98. He suddenly got asked by his pc to put in the code off the disk, which he did. When he pressed ok, it refused to accept the code, and has now basically locked him out. He has no other web access to fall back on, so no idea how to resolve this. I've no reason to doubt him saying it's a kocher version of the o/s. Any ideas? I did suggest phoning ms support, but have no idea what number to call in the uk.
I recently moved my winxp from one hd to another, and had to phone ms in the uk to verify that, which was actually a very painless process, could this be a similar thing? He does say that hes made no hardware changes though.

as far as im aware there is no reason for Windows to all of a sudden ask for you to put the licence key in unless its not legitimate? Not aware of any Windows 98 downloads that would cause this, but the windows genuine advantage downlaods are causing all sorts of issues with people with dodgy copies of XP installed ! If it really is a genuine version, get him to call Microsoft on the same number you called, if its not the right dept they will soon direct him to the coreect one !
