Default Recommend an Anti-Virus program

Hello

I've been using Kaspersky for a while now, but my subscription is coming to and end and it appears not to work with Vista.

Can anyone recommend an anti-virus program? Preferably one that doesn't take up too much resource on the PC and isn't that expensive (and isn't the spawn of the devil McAfee).

Go on I dare someone to suggest Norton

Nod32 is meant to be very good, however for freebie AVG i've found to be ok - although some other people will say it misses some virus's and is also a complete pain on some systems

Ya pays ya money (or not) i suppose...

Nod32, AVG is utter toliet

the two main things:

* detection rate is dire i.e it doesn't detect that many viruses, which sort of
makes it a bit pointless as an anti-virus package and also gives you a false
sense of security

* it's a pig to get off your system once it's on

people say "its fine on my machine" but what type of argument is that, after working on machines with it on, then using (in most cases) symantec to detect the viruses and get shot of them I hate it with a passion

I ask you with urge to try something along the lines of kaperspy, Nod32 etc, yes they cost money but they are soooooo much better

AV-Comparatives

goto the comparatives tab and look at the results, of course you can't take this as gospel just like all websites but its a good starting point

Rubbish. How do you know you haven't got viruses using AVG? All viruses don't come with a signpost telling you that your pc is infected. They do their dirty work quietly.

many "gremlins" as you put it dont intend on letting you know they are there, instead they are logging what you type and gathering as much info on you as they can

Not true. There are viruses out there designed to sit quietly on you machine without alerting you to their presence whilst they quietly scan through your personal information etc..

here is their pledge...100% detection rate of AVG Free for Windows System is continuously certified by independent ICSA laboratories.
That's rubbish as well. I've seen numerous independant virus comparisons, and AVG almost always comes out bottom. It doens't need to catch 100% of them to be "certified".

I've experienced this myself by having to fix peoples machines which have had it installed, (mainly due to visues which it hasn't detected or hasn't removed properly after detection). It's a nasty piece of software which lures people into a false sense of security. Best avoided at all costs...

How do you know?

There could be a malicious virus sitting quietly on your machine, transmitting your personal information all over the internet, and you'd never know anything about it. Zone alarm is a good firewall, but it won't stop viruses, and as already mentioned, AVG does miss a lot of things.

If you are happy running the risk then fair enough. I know (having seen the possible damage) I wouldn't touch avg with a very large bargepole. You get what you pay for...

That's right. Stick your head in the sand and it'll all be ok

You can buy a decent antivirus for not very many pennies these days (usually works out at less than £1 a week). It amazes me that people are willing to risk exposing all of their personal data / banking information etc to the internet scum out there, for the sake of spending less than a pint of beer.

Just started using AVG as well after removing Norton. I use it inconjunction with Prevx (Malware/Spyware) which i've found to be excellent

mike et al - thanks for the info around what AVG does not pick up and how bad it is etc - i'll make my own judgement based on my experience with the product and be prepared to eat humble pie if i get problems with virus's in the future - for now tho i'm happy with the system as is

As an IT professional I have used many products over the years. In my opinion the two best Anti Virus products are McAfee and Sophos.

Spyware is a different matter altogether. But Ad-Aware is pretty effective.

Just my opinion of course.

AVG will catch some things, it just won't catch everything. That's where the danger lies as it can lead you into a false sense of security.

If people must run AVG, then it's a good idea to run one of the free online scanners from time to time (I think Panda and McAfee do one). They won't remove viruses, but they will tell you if you've been infected...

from past experience, when you run a free virus removal it tells you that it has found potentially bad things and that you need to purchace the 'pro' version to get rid of them
