Default windows media centre & HD 50" plasma

My friend has just purchased an Acer media centre with 2 digital TV cards. Went round today to connect it up to his 50" L&G plasma and are having a few issues. Can anyone help?

Firstly we used the HD (HDMI) lead to connect the Acer to the plasma then went about configuring the display using the wizard in media centre but when we set the resolution to 1280x742? The PC screen fits the display but when you watch TV the picture is very narrow on the plasma (stretched?) I have tried various setting on the plasma but with no luck. The only way I can get full screen TV is by dropping the resolution to 680X460 witch means when in PC mode the desktop won't fit on the screen.

When you watch the normal analogue signal the picture fits fine

Can anyone offer any advice?
