keep an eye out for the dell offers ( www.dell.com/weboffer ) they are updated at 10am each day they start and last for sometimes only a few mins.
There was an intel core duo , decent spec (though could have lived with a memory upgrade)incl XP for under 500 quid about 10 days back.

One of the Acer ones would get my vote. Work ones have been very stable, as has the one I recommended for my cousin. Myriad of configs though and search the web for best prices

Another vote for Dell here. Been using mine every day for about 8-9 hours a day for nearly 2 years now, and it's still going as good as it did when new...

would defo recommend dell, I use one of the cheapest they do at work for ECUTek mapping, bit clunky but never gone wrong and gets used every day.
Was cheap too, only about 299 quid. lol
No style to it though.

IMHO it would be DELL (Find a Notebook, Desktop, Server, Printer, Software, Service, Monitor or TV at Dell.) all the way - been using them for years for work and push them hard (lots of graphic and video work). Always reliable, in fact the only thing that's gone wrong with any of the ones I've had was a DVD drive failure which they replaced within 24 hours so I can recommend the support you get from them too.
If you'd rather not go for a Dell, HP do some pretty good kit.
Don't go for anything by Acer, Packard Bell or the like - there's a reason they're cheap.
Sony Viaos are good but you pay a premium for the Sony name. I've also had some nightmares with Toshibas and I certainly wouldn't buy another one.
Cheers
