Hello mate,
Is this for your 360 ? The Xbox 360 supports the following resolutions when using the VGA AV cable: 640×480, 848×480, 1024×768, 1280×720, 1280×768, 1280×1024, 1360×768, and 1920×1080. Pick a monitor that supports the highest you want to use as a native resolution for 1:1 pixel mapping. Check for compatibility for 1080p too as some monitors have ahd problems.

So are all LCD monitors going to give equivalent quality as an HDTV with a 360 plugged in? If I pick a monitor that can do 1360x768 (which is what the HDTV could do) does that mean it will look exactly the same as on the HDTV?

I already have a 15" lcd but it only supports 1024x768. I take it this wont look as good as a monitor that does 1360x768?
Are there any monitors you recomend, as cheap as possbile really as the HDTV was only £380
I can't wait to get this finally sorted as I have had the 360 over a week now and hardly touched it as I want to play it on a decent screen and not on the CRT
Oh and also should it be a widescreen LCD to match the TV's or will a normal LCD do?

The HP W19 get's some great reviews over on the Xbox forums.
PC World: Cheap HEWLETT PACKARD TFT Monitors - HEWLETT PACKARD W19 Flat Screen TFT Monitor
I picked up a VGA cable on Ebay for £6 and have been running my 360 through a TFT monitor for the last week or so, I definitely won't be going back to my 38" CRT set..

Thanks Mogsi. Can you get those vga cables in a shop anywhere as I am tempted to go to PC World right now and get one of those monitors as i'm working from home today Then it will be 360 testing time and finally get the thing on line and play it

I got the Acoustic Solutions 32" from Argos. It seems i'm the only one on avforums though who found it poor so I guess it must be my aerial. The monitor will be a much better solution for me as it means the Mrs can watch telly and not give me an ear bending if I want to play 360
Which one of these two is best?
PC World: Cheap ADVENT TFT Monitors - ADVENT X19TV Flat Screen TFT Monitor
PC World: Cheap AOC TFT Monitors - AOC 193W/S Flat Screen TFT Monitor

Cheers Mogsi, will do but tempted with the one that has the built in TV tuner as this means I can watch Champions League footie and leave the Mrs to watch her programmes in peace

bear in mind hd telly isn't around much yet, dgital is still on norm and will look a bit blurred on larger tellys., we've just got a sony 27 inch thing and even on that the tv is a bit blurred unless you look at it from across the room.
digital will either work or you'll get static.

Lol having given your lot a 3-0 thrashing we should make it through
Got that Advent monitor as it looked very nice in store, nearly went for an HP 20" but checked the specs and it was 25ms response time
Can't set it up yet though and comment on it until my youngest is in bed so will have to wait till later.

Well got the monitor all working and on the PC is stunning at 1440x900. On 360 i'm having problems though, can't get it to display at 1360x768, only 1200x1024 although it still looks good. I set the 360 to 1360x768 but then the monitor will only output at 1024x768. I put it to 1200x1024 and it dispalys that fine.
Biggest issue is no sound. I am using the Xbox 360 vga cable but the only place to plug the audio leads into are the rgb sockets on the side of the screen, well those are only used for the av channel of the TV, not the monitor Don't know how I am supposed to get that to work If thereis no way to get it owrking I will have to take the bloody thing back.

Very nice. I will have to find a set of speakers that have that type of audio connection on them or get the sockets that will allow me to connect into the back of the monitor. Off to check Maplins website.
Also what res on your monitor do you get your 360 to play at? I can only get mine to show 1200x1024. Is this down noticeably on quality from true HD?

OK so would I be bettewr off doing that instead of 1200x1024? Also thanks for those links, called Maplins and got the bits I need, well the rca phone to 3.5mm jack. I will need to look about to find speakers with rca phono sockets on as they all seem to have 3.5mm sockets on as standard.

Try the 2 resolutions and see which one you prefer, your monitors native res is 1440x900 so your always going to get some upscaling, I just personally found that 1280x720 looked the best for me. I'm surprised thought that you couldn't get 1360 x 768 working!! Is your 360 set to widescreen?
Hopefully in a future update M$oft will add support for 1440x900, god knows why they have'nt already...

Ah ok so it could in future support better res, never thought about MS updates for the 360
I have it set as widescreen but the monitor wont display at 1360x768 whjen setting the 360 as that, it scales down to 1024x768.
I will try the 1280x720 and see what happens.
Also the monitor has only one vga socket on the back for inputs is there any adapter on the market that allows you to have two inputs that are switchable? Could use a kvm switch I guess but would rather just have an adapter on the vga port if one exists? At the moment I have to swap the pc and 360 vga cables over depending which one I want to use.

Cheers Mogsi. I think I have one of those old switches in my loft somewhere but I also went to see our Hardware team and they 'lent' me an old kvm/vga Belkin switch that has a button switch on it so don't need to worry about keyboard and mouse connections to swap the input Going to try this when I get in. I just can't wait until everything is finally setup and I can use the 360
