Default Laptop startup issues

OK,

No good with computers in any way whatsoever but I have recently been given a Compaq laptop which I understand is not going to set the world alight but for what I need it for it suits fine.

Well I say fine but there is a problem when I try and start it up, it will start up fine with the mains plugged in but when its not it will only let me start up in safe mode (with command prompt)

Any clues as to why this is happening or wha the problem might be, I guess its either a hardware issue or a setting that needs changing?

Any help would be gratefully received as it is not really a laptop while it needs to plugged in!!!

Cheers

Derek

how long does the battery last when you start it up on the mains & turn off the power?
