Question Compaq Ipaq 3850 - Sat Nav???

Hi Guys,

I just bought a compaq ipaq 3850 for £15 from my work. I haven't got much of a clue about these things but thought it was worth having for the money. What I'd like to do is get sat nav runnning on it. Just wondered if anyone knew what I have to buy and where I can get the software from. Also how much its going to cost me roughly?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Hi m8,

At the price you paid for it you are not going to be at a loss..(you can easily make a bit on that by sticking it on fleabay.

If satnav is what you want on it then it will have to be wired since there is no bluetooth on that model its probably still running windows 2002 you can upgrade to 2003 from here ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp2...00/sp21474.exe

To be honest with you it will not be cost effective getting the extra hardware needed (besides the SD that you can always carry on) in order to complete this unless you find a second hand kit (maybe fleabay) on the dirt cheap to go with this... also bare in mind that this is only a 200mhz processor so you will not get much joy out of that... has for the software there are some options... diferent makes and also buy or go the warez way...

Its not my intention to disapoint you m8 but my honest sugestion is flog it on fleabay and put it towards something with a bigger processor and bluetooth or maybe go for navigation that is also available for certain types of mobile phones and works really well.

Just my two pence worth

WBR

ive just sold a complete sat nav solution that included a 3850. That i had used for the last 2 years, it worked supebly all the time, although the battery was shot and would last no more than 30 mins but i just had a car charger continually plugged in.

Your best bet for one of these units is a gps sleeve which fits on the rear of the unit. Look up Emtac (is called 'transplant' in the US) or navman sleeves.
Using one of these sleeves means no messy cables and just one bettery to handle as the IPAQ battery runs the sleeve too. So only one in car charger needed.

Both these work really well with TOM TOM 3, TOM TOM 5 can be made to work with these sleeves but its a bit messy. (i found the Emtac sleeve better than the Navman, but the Navman is more popular on the 2nd hand market).

Mark.

OK, I picked up the ipaq today. Bargain for £15. NWMark, the sleeve you talk about is exactly what I'm after. I'll have a search around. Once I have that, do I just need to install Tom Tom and thats it? Is it that simple? Where do I get Tom Tom software from and how much??
Also, with regards to the above link to upgrade to 2003, I assume I've got to download this to my computer and transfer to the ipaq via usb and then just run the file? I really have no idea what I'm doing yet. Got to learn how to use the thing really.
Thanks for any help
