Default Video iPods Shipped With Windows Virus!

Love this statement

"As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it. "

Apple - Support - Small Number of Fifth Generation iPods May Be Carrying Windows Virus

McAfee Stinger has been updated to detect this and can be found here

It does pose one question: "wtf are Apple doing using Windows PCs?"

Probably not Apple themselves - they use various OEMs to manufacture iPods.

Interesting. I thought that when iPods shipped they were not pre-formatted, thus when you connect it to a machine you need to run the iPod updater which will format the drive using FAT32 or HFS, depending on the platform being used.

I know that with some of the eariler models you could specifically purchase it for Windows or Mac, the difference being, I think that they were pre-formatted, but I thought Apple had stopped doing that.

I can see why they had go at Windows. If you put the iPod on the Mac it'd be perfectly happy, virus or not. Put it on windows, bam, you're screwed.

I've got a software restore CD from Dell which has a virus in the soundmax software, so this type of thing isn't that uncommon, and it's the manufacturing process that's really at fault.

That's exactly the point, the virus is for Windows, so it won't effect a mac running Mac OS X (would probably infect bootcamp though). As far as I'm aware there has not be a proper "virus" for macs for quite some time. Rootkits, and trojans, yes, but they were not the same as PC equivelents as they required some user interaction (entering of local administrator account name and password to provide escalated permissions).

It's almost as bad as an anti-virus company slating Microsoft for including anti-virus protection within the OS...

I wish they would rather than just producing an application.
