Default Fresh XP Pro Install problems

Help please,

I attempted a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on my laptop at the weekend without success. The laptop had been having major problems resulting in the message "Error loading opertaing system" when trying to boot.

I booted from the XP Pro CD and formatted the existing partition which took approx. 1hr. It then installed the files etc. and restarted the machine as it should but it still came up "Error loading operating system". I then tried to boot again from the XP CD which it tries but then hangs with just a black blank screen.

Any ideas guys?

boot from CD, delete ALL partitions, create new ones and format using ntfs quick option.

Then install the operating system onto NEW partition of your choice. That should do the trick nicely.

Daz,

Thanks for the reply but as stated above, it now won't boot from the XP CD. It asks if I wan't to boot from CD and the disc spins up but all I get is a blank black screen and the disc stops, no HD activity either.

When I attempted the install, I thought that formatting the existing partition was favourite rather than deleting and creating a new one. However, it appeared to format ok and then went on to install the files before restarting which I assumed was fine.

Any other ideas?

If it has a floppy drive you could try making a boot floppy and boot from that.

Place diskette in the computer.

Open My Computer, right click the A: drive and click Format.

In the Format window, check Create an MS-DOS startup disk.

Click Start

this will give you a dos prompt

this should then allow you to format the existing partitions.

If this works and you manage to get the windows xp boot cd working I would still delete all the partitons and create new ones.

Daz,

Thanks again for trying to help, but as I can't boot the laptop from either HD or CD, i can't use the floppy.

Anyone?
