Xp Explorer crashing
I've fitted an extenal HD to my new Dell.
I've copied loads of files on there, to use it was a backup.
When I ese
Explorer to view the folders, it closes down, with a message that it's protecting me from potential viruses.
I've run a virus checker and Scandisk against it.
I've converted to NTFS, re-formatted and re-copied all the files, and it still does it.
If I open a CMD window, I can move files about ok, so it doesn't look like a hardware issue, but I would have thought that re-formatting would have sorted it.
The only other thing I can think of is to wipe it again, and try putting the files back on bit by bit, until it starts crashing again. Could take a while with 50+ Gb...

Hmm, should be ok from the virus side then (was just checking you weren't using avg).
Have you got any script files (.js .vbs etc) in the root of the drive? I'd have thought that whatever is causing it would be present in the root as this is the first place explorer will look...

I think it's something in my profile causing the crashing, I'll have to narrow it down.
Also I've got a 300Gb drive attached throuigh USB2. Device Manager detects it, but doean't show any partitions, and there's no letter assigned. It's XP compatable, and has data on. Might the single partion (created on a differnt PC) cause a problem with this one (new Dell)?
How do I re-partion or format it when there's no drive letter assigned?
thanks
