Default Autumn update to bring 1080p HD to Xbox 360

Fresh from the TGS comes another shocking press release from the XBox team : apart from some graphical retouching the upcoming Fall Update will enable 1080p True HD support for all Xbox 360 games. Simultaneously more news surfaced about the HD-DVD expansion and upcoming games in Japan. team: apart from some
Obviously intended to counter Sony’s bold claims over the past few years that their upcoming Playstation 3 console will be the only real next-gen console with True HD 1080p support, the Xbox team has now seemingly taken down yet another one of their archrival’s primary weapons. What the true technical value of the statement is remains to be seen: many game developers and industry professionals have doubted the use of supporting full 1920×1080 resolutions on the PS3, since the GPU is nowhere near strong enough to render that many pixels with what we have come to expect as next-gen graphics. Considering the Xbox 360 GPU has approximately identical rendering horsepowers, there’s no reason to assume many 360 games will adopt the new output options. Joystiq’s brief conversation with MGS manager Shane Kim confirms:
Kim clarified that, while the software patch would upscale all content to resolutions as high as 1080p, Microsoft themselves had no plans to produce gaming content taking advantage of this ability. He was similarly convinced that very few other developers would see the value in producing 1080p games, with the singular exception of Sony’s first-party studios, eager to validate the value of the capability.
Fundamental support for 1080p does bring some tangible advantages to the platform though: similar to the way the Xbox 360 can already dynamically rescale output to 720p and 1080i resolutions, the update will enable the console dynamically upscale any output to the progressive 1920×1080 resolution. This effectively means that all games and DVD’s can be enjoyed in glorious True HD quality, despite being rendered internally at a lower precision.

Besides the 1080p announcement, Microsoft also confirmed nearly 110 high-definition games will be available this holiday season in Japan, including the highly anticipated Blue Dragon from Microsoft Game Studios themselves, and stated the upcoming HD-DVD expansion will launch in Japan for 19.800 yen (about $167). Keep watching this space for more information from the Tokyo Games Show.

Poor old Sony, that's their 1080p argument out of the window. I just hope the PS3 is silent, other than that I have little reason to buy it.

Still begs the question whether a HD add-on will be a necessity to play some of the future games - if its only use is for films I'd rather get a standalone player.

Unless MGS, GT & WipEout make their way to the 360 I'll still be buying one.
