Aup Nige, try going to a computer fair. Usually held in sports centers
You can get absolute minters from them at 1/3 of the normal prices!
Just make sure you shop around before hand
My mate bought one for £300 only prob he had was a dodgey copy of windows, ,but who wants to give microsoft money anyway

I know it is a bit more than your budget, but its worth a look. Bought it this week, and i'm very impressed.

Please don't buy a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop whatever you do . . .
They're reliability is total and utter sh!te
Log on to the fujitsu siemens forums and you'll see they all have lots of common faults that Fujitsu do **** all to sort out for you.
I didn't learn my lesson with my first fujitsu-siemens laptop that had 3 screens fail within the space of 14 months, then it failed again and Fujitsu told me to F**K OFF basically. It wasn't a cheapo spec one either, cost around £1500 at the time.
I for some unknown reason replaced it with another newer Fujitsu-Siemens laptop, probably 'cos it was cheapish for the spec. And guess what?
Yup, its a stinking pile of poo thats spent more time broken than working and Fujitsu yet again have been fobbing me off until its now out of warranty and STILL has the original "under warranty" fault but now they're saying "F**K OFF its out of warranty"
Total and utter ***** IMHO
