Default Norton Antivirus rip off warning

Anti virus on my laptop just expired so went to download it but the site wasn't working too well so just went in through symantec.com for the download to find that I could download it for £20.99. When it came to confirming this it told me the product wasn't available in my area.

Found the UK version of the site and, guess what, the price is £39.99.

You'd think they would at least use some vaseline!

Anyone suggest a good replacement from a company that will not ask me to bend over if I try to order their product from within the UK?

Right, I'm going to give NOD32 a try then, I don't mind paying for it at all but I object to paying £20 more just because I live in rip-off UK.

Another vote for AVG, though I paid for the full version (and don't mind - they need to make a livig and they don't charge ripoff prices)

AVG is fine, NOD32 is the best though.

ISP up for renewal? BT broadband included in price is Norton AV and firewall. Sure other isps do something like too. Why pay for AV when you can get it free with ISP. Or get avast/avg free ones etc.

Kaspersky is very good too (you'd be amazed what it finds that others don't)

Another vote for Kaspersky, am just using it on my new install after I got very fed up with McAfee (for various reasons), and it seems to be much less irritating, as well as picking up a whole bunch of virus's McAfee missed. Personally I'd never install Norton, as once you put something from Norton on your machine, it's there for life!

The tech support is very good too, do some research and read some reviews on Nod, it seems to win every group test that it's entered into.

Kaspersky.

Recently renewed the subscription and it gave me 6months extra for free (18months total) and it was still cheaper than Norton.

Found no problems installing myself. Had to go to BT website to download it though. Would have thought it would be done via the install CD but hey, only a coupla extra mouse click.

Why wouldn't it install on your PC? What were the errors?

Had the same with McAfee last year. Hey you can download it from our UK site for twice as much. So downloaded it from the US site

It's about to expire may change from McAfee as it seems to slow my PC down no end..

Have not a clue. BT tried to install it remotely and couldn't. There was no AV or firewall on the computer in question other than the MS firewall. When the computer was new I downloaded NAV direct from Symantec and it wouldn't install then, either.

I know someone with BT BB and their MSEx server with NAV reported a virus that slipped through BTs net.... Would be a little wary of relying on that.

Those are windows system files (one is actually the swap file for instance). The only difference between NOD32 and other AVs is that the others either a) don't scan them at all, or b) don't report the failure to open them. If any of those files had been replaced by a virus: a) NOD would be able to open them, and b) Windows would have fallen over long ago.

yes exactly, AVG has an awful detection rate, people can slate norton as it can hog system resources, but it DOES do a much better job of catching viruses than avg does

As well as AV software EVERYONE should have these three installed, AV software on its own is just not enough (even though they claim to work against spyware - they still let lots through):

Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot s&d: http://www.spybot.info/
Ewido: http://www.ewido.net/en/

All free except the last which is a trial - but it picks up and cleans stuff that the other two can't....If you turn it off, so it doesn't load on boot up you can keep it on your system for when Spybot or adaware can't clean off infections.

For very bad spyware/hijack infections you need to use a program called "fixwareout" advice on its use is often found on the usual geek forums (just google fixwareout to find where it is - as there is no official website).

This is a handy tool for Cleaning up your trash that accululates on the system:

Ccleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
