Unhappy Help???

a couple of days ago a windows warning popped up saying that someone was trying to access my computer files and I should click on this icon to do something about them. It turned out to be an advert to selling some soldier security system from Windows. Trouble is it seems to have got into my Windows files.
My desk to can only now be colours it has made my picture of the kids disappear and I cant get it or anyother picture back. The computer seems slower. It wont let me do a system restore past August 3rd and even then will not let it complete.
I now have lots of pop ups saying:Project 1 run time error type miss match 13?????

I sthe computer well and truely knackered or is there someone out there who can advise me

thanks in advance

It sounds like you need to get yourself some Antivirus software and pretty quick - AVG is free from here - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

It's not the best in the world, but it's free !

Better ones would be Norton Antivirus or Internet Security or even McAfee Internet Security Suite

It'd probably be worth while also downloading and running one or more of the following spyware progs...

spybot
Ad-Aware Se Personal
Windows Defender

top two from www.download.com
Bottom one from www.microsoft.com

Have you downloaded and run spybot and Ad-Aware ?? Do this first...

If you have and then fixed all the issues these should have found most everything that is infecting your PC, spyware + adware wise, therefore any pop-ups such as these are only scaring you into buying their product, when in fact you have nothing wrong with your system - so ignore them, ie close them down

I have run Adware 6, AVG and AOL has a spyware detector as well, so all of these have been run

Is it possible to get rid of these adverts to buy their security, how do they manage to get onto your system in the first place, its very annoying

Registry mechanic found 112 medium risk problems, but I take it you have to register and pay online before it will sort them for you

I believe within Internet Explorer there is actually a pop up blocker which should do the trick - i've not got it installed on my version at work here, but normally you will find it under the Tools tab.

Failing that http://toolbar.yahoo.com/ will install a pop-up blocker on your browser toolbar which should also get rid of these pop-ups in my experience anyway

It'll do some of them, but given they're medium i would'nt bother, and yes you'd need to pay for the full functionality

Removing some entries from the Registry is not always a good idea it can sometimes cause more problems than it fixes depending on what software etc is loaded on your machine - i would'nt recommend for normal running unless you're really retentive about your machine's performance.

Mess up your Registry altogether and you're looking at a complete rebuild - unless you take regular system checkpoints

you need to disable your messenger service

click on start then click on run.
in the run box type " services.msc", then look for "messenger" right click then click on properties then change the startup type to "disabled"

this should stop thoese annoying messengers

I would just format the hard drive and start again - it does the system good with a fresh install as it cleans all the built up crap hiding on your pc
