Email problem

i'm using Outlook Express which i have always used, for some reason tonight i keep getting the new mail notification, when i go to my inbox i delete the messages then empty the deleted items. I then get them back in my inbox again with new message notification?
When i click on send/ revieve it gets to receiving message 17 of 21 but wont finish receiving it?
I've deleted the same messages 9 times tonight ?
