Need a sound card!! Please help me choose 1
Basically I want to connect my guitar up to my pc so I'm looking for a sound card with either phono inputs or a 6mm jack input.
The idea is to us ethe comp as an amp whilst I relearn and maybe the odd bit of recording.
OR the other option if 1 is available, is an external box, which uses firewire that I could record live stuff to the lappy with (must work with mac)
The only downside is it can't cost alot.

Make sure that the card has an input suitable for a guitar; it's not the same as a line-in or mic-in.
If you have an effects unit, then this could have a line-out in which case most sound cards will do the trick.

If it was me, I'd get something like a Line6 Pod (http://www.line6.com/products/pods/) to use as a pre-amp/effects unit thing (can plug headphones straight in).
It has a line out which can go into most soundcards, Creative X-Fi extreme music is a pretty good card for general use (imho).
Edit - the Line6 Pod XT (at least) has a USB for direct PC/Mac connection, so you don't need a soundcard...

I have no idea what your budget is; Line6 Pod 2.0 is about £115 and XT is around £230 (only looked at one place for these http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/p.php?n=128 so may be cheaper).
Behringer (yuk) do a much cheaper unit, not sure of spec etc. (see link above).

Budgets about 100 quid the place I found the line6's at were 300 dollars.
was looking at this if it will do what I want.

Saying that, all I want to do is plug the guitar into the comp, and maybe use it as an interface at gigs if its needed to record them.

That'll allow you to record via USB, plus all the effects etc.
I've been away from music tech stuff for a few years, so I've no idea what that unit's like.
I'm not sure it'll help recording at gigs - wouldn't you want to get a feed from the mixing desk?
I used to read Sound on Sound for reviews etc. http://www.soundonsound.com/

In all seriousness though, you should really get to try some of these, as they all sound TOTALLY different (read as some sounding sh1te)
The Behringer IS good. Suprisingly
The Tascam is OK
The Audiophile is OK, but poor latency (monitoring of the audio path through the processor) - got them at College. cheap and cheerful, but they are 24Bit/96Khz
Kinda depends on really what you want - if it's an all-rounder, seriously check out the Behringer.....
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM if you need any more help
