Network printer problem got me flumoxed
I have attached a printer to my wireless router via an ethernet cable.
The device now appears on my two computers as a UPnP device and I can open it and ping it from both machines.
My network has Client for Microsoft networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) installed.
The printer installed easily on one PC running XP SP2.
On the second PC it seemed to install fine and then a few days later the PC 'could not connect to printer'.
I removed the printer to reinstall it and it will not install.
When I run the installation wizard it cannot browse for it, if I put in the IP address of the printer is says does not exist.
I can see the printer on my Network Places. I can invoke it. I can ping it.
I just cannot attach a driver to it from the second PC. I have been through the full troubleshooter and it gives up!
The pc is running XP MCE.
Any clues anyone?
TIA,
Rannoch

Does XP MCE have lpr from the command prompt? Send a plain ascii file to printer to confirm whether network or Windoze driver/OS issues.
Something like 'lpr -S bob -P <ip-address> <c:\tmp\txt.txt>'
Note: -S switch requires an entry on HP printers, can be any name - this option is used more when lpr'ing to a queue on a non-Windoze host.
Assuming that works, worst case share the printer on the working workstation and print via NetBIOS through the working PC.....while you fix the driver/OS issue
