You can initiate it via ntlworld's website if you have a cable modem (although the odd modems need physically upgrading) - if you have a set top box you have to ring them.

I'll be ringing them next week

Can't see there being any problems with having 4meg, i've been on NTL's 10meg since november/dec last year.

You probably will need a modem tho if you havent already. The old pace boxes and Samsung can't handle the speed.

We have the 2mb service, but we are not paying the 24.99 price. My dad phoned NTL and asked them to lower the price, so they did to 19.99.

Now what does this mean? as there is NO 2mb service. The 1mb is 17.99 and the 4mb is 24.99. will then up-grade us or down-grade us?

Cheers
Darren

Thats odd - NTL told me the new Samsung boxes can handle up to 7-8Mb potentially.

24meg is already running/testing in some village somewhere, not sure when they plan to unleash it to the rest of us (altho bulldog are now advertising 20+ so maybe this will push them along)

What exactly do you mean? You can't access the internet unless you are connected to your modem

www.ntlworld.com ?

If you want to test your true speed then simply download something like direct x from www.microsoft.com 99% of the time you will get full download speed from ms. You should get roughly 120k/s per 1meg. So people on 10meg should be getting around 11-1200k/s or 1.1meg

bob - I just remember reading about people getting free speed upgrades and wondered what I was now on, I have full access to my BB router obviously but have never connected to the modem, didn't think I could, guessing thats true...
Just curious. Anyway, I logged on to the ntlworld site and it does tell me I'm 1mb. Fast enough for me and only £10 p/m ...

You need to try download something around 10-20meg to give you a good average more accurate speed.

The old modems can handle it. I was running 10 meg about 3 years ago from NTL

I believe that post reads you will need a modem (any modem) as opposed to a set top box aka pace & samsung as they wont handle the speed.

It may not be wise to use MS website as a benchmark at the minute as they've released the latest vista beta online for download which is getting hammered (assuming it's hosted on the same server)

Done the test: what does this mean?
1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec

You are paying £2 more than a 1meg person, and £5 less than a 4meg person. You don't think NTL are just going to reduce your bill just cus you moaned?, they've set your price somewhere in between and given you 2meg which is also in between, cant argue with that
