Default Compressed Backup

Recently I've been working on a Fedora Core 3 server for home which just serves media to various workstations in the house. The samba shares are all set up and I can read and wirte etc. to an external hard drive on the Linux.

Ideally I would like to back my itunes library up and store it remotely just in case . So my question is whether or not it is worth compressing to whole library or not (currently about 40Gig of music in total)?

Any feedback much appreciated,

jrxrs

surely the music is allready compressed and trying to further compress it is pointless?

very little point of compressing music as, as states its already a compressed format... i could get very technical about algorithms but i'll not bother... its the same with jpg's also...

I suppose you could always tar or gzip the whole lot up. But you will notice 0 to very little difference in compression and space saving.

Back in my days of starting computers, I zipped up a load of mp3's and jpgs and the zip file was larger than the files!!
