What do people use? Have an old laptop at work that runs XP ok but wouldn't be any good for server 2003 and want it to be a dhcp server for when I update the Neoware thin clients on my desk that I look after. I'm too lazy to continue giving static ips to the machines when I need to put them on my desk to administer/image them and then change them back to dhcp when they go back on their network, I just want to plug them in so I can get straight on with what I am working on.
Why not just use a cheapo router like a linksys or whatever.
get them for peanuts on fleabay now.
Most are the 4 port switch variety with dchp server, if its an adsl 4 port router, u dont actually have to use the adsl function. but the dhcp side will work fine.
I used one for ghosting etc etc
btw , u werent going to attach a dhcp server to your network were u

Because I am not spending any money on something at work, what a proposterous idea!
And no its not going on the network
like I said these boxes go on my desk to be imaged, changed, played about with etc and are administered from a laptop. I know there is software out there, just wanted to get the best one recomended by good old SN
Basic need is connect Neoware box to laptop via cross over cable and it gets an ip address straight off and I hit the re-image button with no fart ar$ing about by me.

Oi hang on a sec! Wasn't having a dig and appreciate the reply
I work for a big company and don't do any procurement myself any more so no chance of getting a cheapo router and no one is allowed to bring in kit from home so router isn't the answer unfortunately, although its the simplest.
I'm just after a software solution for dhcp I can bung on this crappy old laptop that doesn't involve me reinstalling the OS and setting up all the software again

You can get a trial version of DHCP Turbo from Weird Solutions (look under Products/Standard Server Software) which will handle up to five clients.

XP includes a small DHCP Allocator Utility. This is used upon activating ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). The host allocates ip address's to all clients that are DHCP enabled.
Allthought you dont want your other hosts connecting to the internet, this still allows your XP client to hand out IP address's.
Plus it's allready included within XP and its free.
