Dynamic Ip?
i use a tiscali broadband service for my work pc
this is mainly to help pass time and browse sites while at work, but it is also used to broadcast my dvr card over the net, enabling me to sit at home and check up on the staff
check what time they open up or go home etc etc, its handy
the problem i have is tiscali tends to change the ip when it disconnects, sometimes this will not happen for days, other times its 2/3 times per day
the very "shonky" dvr card help file (with comedy english translation) attempts to tell me about a "dynamic ip" service where by when ever my pc connects to the internet it connects to a server which gives a fixed ip
at the moment i am checking the ip before i go home at night via "whatismyip.com" and scribbling it down, which is not ideal, and i am then adding it to my msn address so everybody else who needs it gets an updated number
current address is
http://80.41.235.36
not much to see, 2 cams are still offline 1 colour cam up a big pole outside and one on the "prewash pad" and its raining here and ive given the staff the afternoon off
there is nothing on the pc except a fresh install of XP, some anti virus/adaware and the dvr software.
the instructions give the address of what i believe is a Chinese "dynamic site for free" but i do not have a clue what all the squiggly little characters mean

I had exactly the same issue with my works DVR setup. I just called up our ISP and asked them to give me a static IP which they did (for free, as well). Might be worth either contacting Tiscali and seeing if they can do it, or look at other providers.
I too tried the address forwarding service thingy, but it was too much of a pain, the static IP did the trick.

I use http://www.dyndns.com for mine. Makes it easier to use remote desktop etc if my IP changes
My router automatically updates the site with any IP changes.

I can ping the address washcam.gotdns.org and it returns the IP address of 80.41.235.36, so that bits fine. Assuming that this is the correct IP address, what software is running on the PC to respond to the requests ?

Could be your firewall assuming the IP address is correct.
All DNS does is convert an understandable name to the IP address, so it's pretty basic in operation.

check that your web server is configured for default pages and that it's set to default.htm. That's one reason why it wouldn't jump their automatically.
Dydns should make any difference. I use it fine with my own web site.

for some random reason it just stops working sometimes and i need o mess about to have it working
the http server program needs to be opend before the dvr software i think?
tbh i am out of my depth with this stuff, i just mess about until it works, and ask questions when it wont
i think the dvr software is compleatly crap TBH
cheap hong kong rubbish that has probably been updated 20 times since i got this setup, but there are no instructions on how to update it, no hints anywhere on any help files, i still have no idea who even made the software/card in the first place ?!?

Sounds like a real PITA
Maybe if you can show us where it was purchased from we could try and work out some details on it ?
I notice its asks you to download webview.exe. Anything to do with this ?

Dear Mr. Owens,
Thank you for contacting Tiscali Customer Support.
I understand from your email that you require a Fixed IP address. Most VPN (Virtual Private Network) requires a Internet connection with static IP address. Tiscali provides Dynamic IP address for home users and they are released by our DHCP (Dynamic Host configuration protocol) servers.
We give Static IP only to our Business Broadband Customers. Please contact our Business Broadband at sales@applicabroadband.co.uk and telephone number is 08701 624 993, in case you wish to change your subscription from Consumer Broadband to Business.
I have also performed some tests on your account and I believe the connection speed has now been improved. You can restart the computer and then try to connect to Tiscali Broadband.
In case you have any other queries, suggestions or comments, please do feel free to contact us.
Regards,
Tiscali Customer Support
