Home Network set up with 2 PC's, 2 Xbox's(1 360) and a Laptop
Right, bit long winded but please read!
recently got Telewest broadband which has screwed up my home set-up some-what as now instead of the telephone connection which plugged nicely into my D-link wireless router i now have the choice of ethernet or USB into a pc from the cable modem...
I wanted to have one of the pc's in my room plus the xbox, but i didnt want the xbox using internet sharing from the pc over wireless as it can drop the connection every now and then and thats not what you want in the middle of a game!
is there a way of running the ADSL through the router via one of the ethernet ports? if so i could then run a cat 5 to my room for the xbox and one to the 360 and use wireless for the pc's..?
Just that if buy a wireless acces point the only way (i know of) of connecting the Xbox's is through internet connection sharing on the pc's....which i dont really want to do...
Any help much appreciated, i can hear Halo 2 calling me!
Thanks

echo - take the line out of the usb modem. Put it into your ADSL Router (assuming it's got a modem built in)
Make sure your password etc is set up in the router's admin pages.....
Set up the cabling as per before.
Done

99.9999% sure It won't work as the connection has not been routed. You need a WAN port on a router that is ethernet. An ADSL router routes ADSL not cable. If the connection is terminated in ethernet or USB you will need a broadband router that can route a connection terminated in ethernet (RJ45). Converting the cable is no good either as the dialing properites are totally different on ADSL to cable
just to double check, you were on ADSL but are now on Cable (NTL, Telewest)

same as above really.
- You need a broadband router not an ADSL router.
- First connect the router to the PC (standard Rj45 not the WAN port) and clone the MAC address to the router. (you may or may not need to do this, depending on how telewest authenticate you, with NTL its done via the MAC address of the cable modem and not the connected PC (unless using a set top box but thats another matter))
- Plug the rj45 cable from the cable modem into the WAN port on the router.
- plug all your other stuff into the router.

as an update, i have managed to get the internet working on my pc.
i currently have it set up in the following way..
telewest modem ---- adsl router ----- pc via ethernet from router
now the internet does work on the pc, connection doesnt seem as quick or stable though, and if i try to connect the xbox via one of the ethernet ports live fails on the 3rd bullet point in trouble shooting, cant remember what it is though!

tidy, so modem is connecting into an ethernet port on the router, and the pc can connect to the net via another ethernet port on the router? I could of sworn that wouldn't work. Off the top of my head i cant remember the third setting on the box, if i get time ill check later

thanks mate,
i didnt think it'd work either but thought it was worth a try, was shocked when it did!
think the 3rd one is something to do with the remote computer not responding?? DNS ??
not sure...

Third one is IP address, is the xbox set to auto network settings if so, you may need to manually give it an address. Keep it to the same IP range so if the other computer for example is 192.168.1.10 give the xbox 192.168.1.xxx where xxx can be between 1 and 255. 4Th one is DNS which may also need to be specified. I havent used Dlink before and to be honest the connection may need routing (new cable router with modem lead into the WAN port) to handle more than one connection at a time. Does the router support UPnP, if so enable it. If the NAT comes up as "moderate" on the test you will need to open the following ports on the router to the Xbox IP address. Giving the XBOX a fixed IP address will help or a reserved IP address in the DHCP pool
TCP 3074
UDP 3074
UDP 88
I once posted on the draytek support forums about using NTL with an adsl router and they all swore it wouldn't work
