Search google for page ranking.

Basically the more websites that provide a link to your website the higher your ranking will be.

I thought there was a way you could pay to appear as one of the first sites to appear when a search for a certain word was done?

You can only pay to appear as a sponsered link on the right handside, you can not influence the order in which the main search results are shown.

That can work out quite expensive... we tried it for 3 months and it cost us more than we earned

However, you could balance the cost by having google ad's on your website

I currently earn around 50 dollars a month for doing nothing!

I optimise sites for a living (I own and run an SEO agency) - I don't want to do a sales plug but if you want to email me I'll give you some quick and simple tips how to get higher in the natural (organic) listings on Google. Bob269 is close, but not entirely correct as you need to consider your anchor text (words used to link to your site, the quality of the sites linking to yours and also the way your site is structured. Even then, Google's algorithym currently uses linking as about 80% - 20% is still down to other optimisation techniques which shouldn't be ignored.

Cheers,

Russ

title tags, alt tags, h1/h2/h3 tags, bold tags, they all help.
It's a big subject. Loads of different techniques.
Don't expect over night success! Anyone guaranteeing #1 is lying

I was assuming metatags / content etc were already considered, it is basic web design procedure

I read it as he's got a kick *** site and wants a boost.

But just building links without considering anchor text is a wasted exercise. Yes, it'll help with a Google PR but that's worthless if a guy selling grommets can't be found for his typical search terms. A good example of anchor text importance (apologies if this is SIAL) is by going to Google and typing in 'Miserable Failure'. Who comes up first? George Bush's website but of course he didn't mention those words anywhere in his site or in the content.

'Misearble Failure' were/is anchor text terms which I believe originally started from about 32 other websites who tactically decided to prove a point by linking to 'Dubbleya's' site using this phrase. Another interesting one is 'Liar'...(Tony Blair).

However, just to contradict myself (to use a GW Bush phrase), a link or two from Google Page Ranked sites will get the search engines to notice you more quickly, but thereafter, regular changes to the site will get them coming back a lot more regulary.
