if hes running 98, make sure his spec is upto running XP or it will be a serious dog to use. no real need to format unless there is a lot of ****e on there, in anycase you can do this when installing XPconvert the drive partition to NTFS for increased sercurity and speed... wont be compatable with 98 tho..

Good luck Very easy job to do

I would rather format the drive first so i know there is a fresh copy of Windows on Pc rather than just putting it on top of 98 so if someone can remind me how to format the drive on Windows 98 from memory do i need to make a boot disc then load up with floppy in drive to get to dos prompt then c: fomat ?

The XP CD should be bootable, it will give you the option to format the drive before you begin. Select NTFS as the filesystem when formatting the drive.

Yep as Bob says, when Im doing a Win2K/XP install I just change the startup sequence in the BIOS to make the CD the first boot device and you can boot straight off the CD and do a re-format all as part of the install process.

Have fun

Windows 98? That'll be on bargain hunt soon!
