Knackered CD writer?
Have a plextor 40/12/40A and its a few years old. For ages now its been unable to read cd's or burn cd's and it just spins them up, stops and then spins them up again and while it repeats this process over and over again explorer is unresponsive as it can't access the drive.
I have updated the firmware and also changed over the ide cables to make sure it wasn't conflicting with other drives. But it has made no difference
Is it knackered or is it case of it may just need cleaning or a minor repair? I thought Plextors went on for ever and it was a superb piece of kit when it was working, very fast and never burnt any coasters.
The one thing that worries me is that I have used it for slight overburning and using 99 min cds so can this have knackered it?

Plextors are very good but as eveything they dont last forever
When a disk spins up then slows down etc .. then it carnt read the info on the disk so its either the disk or , the laser has gone weak . Try cleaning the wirter with a disk cleaner if no joy then new writer time BTW overburning wont help as it states in nero overburning may damage your drive
You can pick a new cd writer up for less than £17 now so i'd throw it & get a new 1

Cheers, don't need a new burner as the DVD drive is an all in one, its just not as fast as the Plextor for CD's. The discs are fine as the DVD burner reads them fine, I think its the laser thats gone I may try one of the cleaning discs but I think the over burning and using 99 minute cds may have been the damaging cause. Just didn't want to bin it as its been such a great drive and would like to get it working again.
