MAX ADLSL Up to 8 Meg (again)
I've just been connected today and I'm obviously in the monitoring period. At the moment I'm getting very poor download speeds, but it's looking quite fit upstream. is this normal when you've just migrated?
Downstream 642.2 Kbps ( = 0.6 Mbps ) Upstream 373.1 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps )

All depends who you are downloading from, try downloading this for a few mins to work out your average kbps

i just migrated to evodsl, and it went live yesterday. but the speed was very unstable and very very very slow! sometimes it even takes 5-10 mins to load a page. is it normal or what?

forget the speedtesters, they do not work well with adsl for some reason
I saw 1.2mb reported on the adslguide speedtester but actually download speed is 5mb

Hmmm. I'm still only getting 717.6 Kbps down, uploads are bang on at 370 kbps. But no matter, that the speed tester is not confirmative of a slow or fast line, I had nearly the full 2 meg down previously with ADSL Flex 2000 on the same tester.

There are two speeds involved, the sync speed, and a speed that's set in BT's BRAS.
With the latter, there's a known issue which means the speed in the BRAS doesn't get changed. BT are working on fixing this, but for most people this won't be a problem, especially after a few days at MAX speeds (more details here).
The first thing that happens when a MAX regrade goes through is it sets about determining your highest possible speed. Now in order to do this, it has to keep cranking up the speed to see what happens. Every telephone line is different and will respond differently. Think of it as a sort of stress test; in order to work out what the maximum possible speed is, it has to go a little nuts to find out what your line's limit is.
This whole process can take up to 10 days. During this time you'll find your line goes down briefly and then comes back up at a new sync speed. This is perfectly normal.
While your line's maximum speed is being worked out, it will likely be run at speeds that it can only support with little or no reliability. This can actually result in slowdowns, because as with anything, when it's working outside of its limits, it gets a little flustered and can't do things properly. Those with routers may then notice more errors in their logs, as well as their noise margin (AKA "signal to noise ratio" or "SNR") dropping through the floor. These can all add up and result in slower throughput, because while your line rate may be faster, it's ultimately lost efficiency.
So please give your regrade some time and let the dust settle.

Cheers Dave, I'll just let things happen for a bit then. I like the new upstream for certain, havent looked at the latancy yet

Isn't this also dependent on how far away you are from the BT Exchange you connect to? I have just done a check on www.btbroadband.com and the fastest they say I can connect at is 5.5Mb.

Mine is still all over the place after 3 weeks or more now Seems solid at just over 6Mbps, which I'm more than happy with as BT's checker reckoned I'd get 4, but it keeps trying higher speeds still which seem unreliable.

Best iv'e had so far is 2.8 meg download but it's all over the place, only on day 4 of the settling in process spends most of it's time not loading at all or 20 minutes for 1 page.
If i reset the router everything works again....for a while anyway

Just noticed this thread.
I've been on 8Mb now for 3 weeks with BT and I'm having to reset my router to get the connection back every few days, although my router is telling me I have a connection at 7712kbps??
I never had any problems on 2Mb, do you think it's the 8Mb supply or my router which is a netgear 834GT?
Anyone else having grief?
Oh and I'm no way near 8Mb speed http://www.kbps.co.uk/SpeedCheck_rep...1147773202_342

I'm still rebooting mine on a fairly regular basis. Just done a test on mine,
http://www.kbps.co.uk/SpeedCheck_rep...1147793727_337
Router, Netgear 834PN, shows download connection of 6688. Not sure these sites are so reliable now as a test elsewhere downloads at 450kBps. kbps gives me a really bad QoS

Im still having grief with this upgrade after 2 weeks now. My connection download fluctuates between 6.6mb and 0.3mb. I cannot use my Xbox live as it wont hold a connection. Very frustrating.

My BT 8mb (not) has been rubbish since day one, around a month ago - it's got worse recently. I expected around 10 days of trouble, but yesterday evening it was dropping the connection every minute or so.
I'll give their helpline a call tonight, but so far I am not that impressed.
Having said that, when it works I'm getting around 5 - 6mb, which is nice.

Mine is still poor as well after 3 months of usage - on 2mb I got a constant maxed out speed all the time but now I get between 1.2mb and 4mb - but for at least 30% of the time I'm getting less than 2mb. Not very impressed.

Well. I have been upgraded from 2mb to 8mb this morning. My router (D-Link 604+) reports connection now at 8192kbs (was 2227kbs). But when I do a speed test I am only getting 1.8mb download speeds. What gives?

speed tests do not seem to work with it in general
use a download manager or IE's download box to measure the real speed
or get netmeter to see what is going on
this test is a bit more realistic

I've just downloaded a video, 40 something meg, at 608KBps, bbmax gives me
Download Speed: 4837 kbps (604.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 374 kbps (46.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
But I've had to reboot my router 3 times today to get a working connection again cos the current one had gone funny.
