Default SATA Hard Drive Install Issue

I got myself a SATA II hard drive to use as storage space. I already have a Striped SATA RAID array as my main 'c' drive.
I installed the new drive, setting the jumper to limit it to SATA I operation as that is all my mobo supports.
It is recognised in the BIOS and in Windows XP Pro it was detected. In Device Manager it is there under the Disk drives tab and I can run the speed test on it under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers tab.
It isn't there under My Computer though so I went to set it up in the Disk Management admin tool. The wizard starts & I run it but the drive refuses to initialize and comes up with an error. I am not selecting the dynamic tab as it isn't a RAID device.
Anyone got any ideas?

You don't need to touch the jumpers daz. Have you tried using the manufacturers CD to format and partition it in the first instance ?

I have two old computers at work both upgraded with SATA 2 drives and I never touched the jumpers.

If not download the manufacturers dos drive test and disable all raid in the bios to make sure the disk isn't damaged.

Cheers. I've fiddled with the BIOS and jumper settings and still no joy.
It's a Maxtor drive, so I ran PowerMax diagnostic and it came back with an error code so it might be fecked.
Waiting for a reply off Maxtor support now before I take it back.

After a bit of digging it seems that this is a software issue.
There are compatibility issues with nForce 3 & 4 chipsets and some SATA II hard drives, not just Maxtor. All parties are working on drivers & firmware updates to remedy the situation.
