Default help buying a laptop please

Anyone out there who can tell me exactly what I should buy or give me a check list of features as I know nothing?

I need a laptop to run a small business from home so just need things like XP, I wont use it for games or anything too technical...

It has to be new as I need the support/warranty but so many models and so many places. Would anyone go to PC World as they seem to have great packages price wise or Dell - which Im sure someone recommended to me years ago...?

Any help (in basic non IT gimp language) much appreciated...

p.s. Im not a subcriber yet so Ive posted in here

I wouldn't touch PC world with a barge pole. Dell kit is pretty fair, but the customer support can be a little suspect. I'd be tempted to buy through a local supplier who can give you first line support, but buy a well known make with a good warranty. Fujitsu Siemens or Sony are worth a look.

A lot will be down to personal preference as any new Laptop will carry out the tasks you mention.

I personally wouldn't buy from Dell, but I have recommended them to friends and family as they tend to be reliable so I don't get **** loads of calls asking for help to mend them.

If anybody rings up telling me they have a Packard Bell from PC World, I just hang up

I've just bought a HP pavilion dv5094ea from John Lewis.

The spec is excellent, the price is competitive.

£699 for the dv5054ea
£799 for the dv5094ea

and John Lewis throw in the second year warranty for free.

It is fantastic. I was initialy concerned that it wasn't an Intel processor, so wasn't branded as "Centrino" (for wireless access)

But, it was unfounded, it used an AMD Turino processor, which gets good reviews, and a Broadcom wireless chipset (which is also used in a high proportion of current wireless routers - including Linksys)

It does everything I could possibly want, and I would definately recomend John Lewis as the place to buy.

I'd take an AMD over and Intel any day of the week. Indeed in all my PC's bar my old laptop, there beats and AMD heart.

I still run 2 pc's from PC World (Packard Bell) and they have been great. The last one I bought I needed it within the hour so choices were limited.

I have a store 5 minutes away and if you go in and tell the business manager what you want to pay for a model you want, then in my experience you get it at that.

Too much bullshít and snobbery is attached to buying a pc (as like most things).

The pretend experts like to think they no better but in reality they are sheep with false aspirations of grandeur.

Yes, the staff are largely muppets but that only makes your position stronger.
