Question What parts at fault?

My cousins PC is a Sony Viao desktop system and has developed some kind of fault.
When under load (ripping DVD or running a few progs) the light goes off on front of the tower, there is a "beep" from inside the tower and the system often shuts down ?
PSU ? Motherboard ?
Any ideas ?

Cheers

Paul.

Poss over heating open the case check fans are working and clean the dust out if it's in a confined area move it out to get more air around it

If you go into the BIOS it should say what temprature it's running at and what it's set to shut down at

Could be power supply starting to fail if it's the tower it should be a standard PC Supply, if you have another pc with a 300w supply or more you could swap over and try it

Also worth Checking the windows Event viewer. this may give you a clue to the problem.

Sounds like an overheating problem with the CPU. Check that the heatsink is sitting correctly over the CPU - I had a similar problem a while back and one of the brackets had broken on the motherboard causing the heatsink / fan to be only cooling half of the chip !
It may also be worth checking the system with another (uprated) power supply as mentioned above. Newer hardware such as graphics cards and optical drives use more juice so maybe it needs more.

May be worth getting hold of some RAM checking software. Maybe one of your RAM DIMMs has developed a fault.
