Question

Buy a lead with a (smaller) round connector, pass it through the hole in the wall, then plug into a round-to-rectangular converter?

Just found this - how to make a serial lead for a mouse!!

Only uses 4 pins.....

Here

Yes, you can chop a lead up - but this might look neater.

I think he is talking about a standard 9-pin or 25-pin serial connector not a mouse lead. Tiggs what are you trying to connect up to?

Sorry to steal your thunder there

It would have helped if Tiggs was giving up a bit more info on what he wants to achieve.

Despite knowing a bit about IT, I know for sure that using polfilla is a ****load easier than attemptiing to rewire a serial connector.
Drink a can of Stella, knock a hole thru the wall, fill it up then go slap the missus. Any further problems, try the DIY forum

ok.....pc been down but back now!

i have a liitole box that plugs into my fish tank monitor- it then talks to the pc via this lead - the lead is suppose to plug into a 9 pin socket thing.

anyway, it wont go through the hole (cant use bigger hole) so i undid the socket and theres only 3 wires anyway - so can i just cut it, put through the hole- re-join?

In a past life I used to install systems into broadcasting studios (BBC, ITN, MTV etc)

Cutting & resoldering serial cables (RS232 and 422) was a daily job, as long as you wire them back in the right order, shouldnt be a problem.
