What does 54 Mbps equate to?

What does 54 Mbps equate to?
I've just changed to wireless and was checking my connection speed. I'm on BT 2meg and was getting just over that on my old wired connection. I've just checked my speed and its in Mbps units and i don't know if i've lost any speed because it never used to show it in Mbps. Can anyone help

Your BT 2meg connection is measured in the same units, 2 Mbps.
Your 54Mbps wireless should easily have a throughput greater than your dsl connection so shouldn't be a bottleneck.
I have never seen 54Mbps give true 54Mbps, best I have seen is around 30Mbps transfer..
Btw:
Mb = Mega bits
MB = Mega bytes
8 bits in 1 byte.
Hope this makes sense.

2 Mbps is
2000000 bits per sec ...... so (2000000/8)/1024 is 244.1 Kper/sec that's your theoretical max download on your connection
by the same maths 54Mbps could allow 6.6MB per second through your network but in reality only 20-30 Mbps is usable banbwidth.
