Default mySql and character sets

Hi,

Hopefully someone might have a quick answer to this

I have a live Win2003 server with PHP4.3, mySql 5.0
I have a Dev mnachine which is a Mac running mySql 4.1.x and PHP5.0.4

I know this is a bit of a mish mash but what I am doing really should be fine and work.

Basically, I have move a site from a Mac live server to this Win server but now the data stored in the records in a 'news' table are showing characters in the wrong format.

Both servers have phpMyAdmin 2.7 on them and when I view the data in the table I can see the characters as they should be.
One of the characters is the degress symbol.

'faultless operation up to 250°' is part of the text and can be seen in both DBs

When I view the news item served from the Mac machine is shows fine, when I view it server from the Win is shows as :
'faultless operation up to 250°'

Both databases are set to 'latin1_swedish_ci' collation in the Database statistics pane.

I cant understand why I can see it fine in phpmyadmin but when I display the chars it comes out screwed...

Anyone any ideas - Pleeeeaassssseeee.....
