Question Wireless Bridge incorporation into a wired network (home)

OK guys, need some help

I've got to incorporate a wireless bridge into my home network.

Trouble is, I've connected it, but no joy.

Have a look at the diagram below - this is what I want. Can you guys tell me if this will do it?

All the kit has fixed IPs, and the router (Origo 8400) is setup to allow IPs from 192.168.1.11 - 192.168.1.50

The D-Link bridge has, from my understanding got a set IP address of 192.168.0.30. My assumption is that due to my router address setting limitations, I can't access this IP. (?)

I've got my PDA with an ACER wi-fi card (this hasn't turned up yet, but it will be set to an IP within the limits stated above)

SO the questions are :-

For me to use my PDA thru wi-fi, will the aforementioned kit work?

If, yes, how do I set up my router to access the D-Link?

Thanks in advance

Dan

Without looking into it in too much detail, I would say it should be fine so long as the sub-net mask for your network is set to 255.255.0.0 (instead of the more usual 255.255.255.0). However, you may still be stuck if you can't edit the subnet mask on your wireless bridge.

EDIT: Had a look at the manual now, and you can edit all the network settings. The IP address you mentioned is the factory default, so you will need to be able to connect to this address initially in order to reconfigure it.

I *think* it won't matter.

I'm guessing that your Origo router acts as a DHCP server for the network. If so, configure the subnet mask on your Origo router to 255.255.0.0 and update all the DHCP leases. Each of your devices (except the D-Link) should then treat the D-Link as being on the local subnet. You should be able to hit 192.168.0.30 from a broswer.
You can then reconfigure the D-Link to have a different IP address, or a different subnet mask.

(If you are not using DHCP, just change the subnet mask on one of your machines temporarily.)

Normally wireless bridges connect 1 device via the ethernet port to your wireless network. I've never tried it that way round but should work ok, maybe..

I think that you cannot access the bridge from your other computers as your router will not know about 192.168.0.x subnet.

You can temporarily add an additional ip address of say 192.168.0.10 with a 255.255.255.0 on one of your computers to access it.

Thanks guys,

I've just setup a different subnet, accessed the bridge, set it up.

Won't be able to test it until my PDA's wi-fi car turns up (hopefully on Wednesday!)

Will keep you posted
