Default XBOX 360 - 720p or 1080i

Put this in to google and you get all sorts of feedback about which is better??!!

What have you guys found?

Personally 720p has better colours, details and is sharper for me.

Comments?

Regards,
Shaun.

I couldn't really see any great difference between the two on my plasma. I guess it would depend on what screen you were using as to which would suit it best...

Is this due to the fact that, today, most "HDTV" sets only have a native resolution that will support 720p (ie they are 1024 x 768 pixels, or 1200 x 768 or something like that). 1080i is supported but half of the data (OK, more accurately, a third) is thrown away as the pixels simply don't exist.

I'm sure that with a TRUE HDTV set - ie one that WILL support 1080 vertical pixels the picture would probably look better, sharper etc. than 720p.

I'm still looking for a decent TRUE HDTV set at the moment, at a realistic price... there's lots of "HDTV ready" units around that don't really support the true 1080i without losing a great deal of detail and the manufacturers often don't make it easy to get to the real specs.

Shades,
After reading on the net, it doesnt seem that straight forward tbh. From what I understand the 1080i even on a set that has a native res of 1280x720 (720p mode) will give higher resolution than 720p, but due to the fact that 1080i is interlaced and not progressive like the 720p mode, the picture can appear to be not as sharp. A progressive mode is better for action figures, but apparantly the higher res 1080i is better for still's. From what I also understand, what will be better than 1080i will be 1080p which is better resolution than 720p but of course has the added benefit of a progressive scan.

It's all double dutch to me!

Regards,
Shaun.

the ones in the Xbox booths are samsung LE26R41B or LE23R41B, not sure of actual size as ive not measured them but they are definately not the 32" ones.

they are 'HD ready' with a resolution of 1366x768. This resolution comes from a direct relation of the PC resolution 1024x768, which of course is 4:3, convert this to 16:9 and you get 1366x768.

even the 32" and 40" version of the above monitor have the same resolution, so even if you set the xbox to output 720p then the TV still has to do some scaling to get a full screen picture.

The HD Ready logo is a bit of crap really as all it means is that the TV has a resolution of at least 720 lines. The actual resolution can be anything over this.

In fact if you get the 360 VGA cable then the Xbox will output in a number of PC resolutions, theres a pic on the net of them somewhere. but the closest to the above is 1360x720, so the TV still has to scale ever so slightly or go 1:1 with 3 pixels either side not used.

I have yeah...
Was previously using it at 480 on a 17in LCD tv in the kitchen and now that I managed to source the vga cable (Rare as rockin horse **** at the minute!!)it's connected to my 20in widescreen Dell PC monitor (2005FPW) and now runs 1360x768
The difference in quality is amazing.Everything looks soooo much more detailed and sharper and does actually make it look like you're playing a next gen console!

Good luck

Thanks Nick. Spoke to Gameplay yesterday and ordered the Joytech vga cable and it will be delivered Friday !!!!! Why people are paying up on ebay is beyond me when Gameplay and gameseek have them in this week. Can't see much difference between the ms and joytech one. Will run it on my monitor before I decide on the tv as I'm not keen on £600 just for a 360 screen.

I saw one of those going for nearly £70 on ebay yesterday - I thought someone was taking the pi55.

Is the 360 a HD-DVD player then? I always assumed it was, but having read an article yesterday regarding developers complaining that the storage capacity was too low (vanilla DVD @ 9gb) and that a "highly anticipated game" (regarded to be Halo 3) was expected to come on 4 DVDs - now I always thought that HD-DVD had a much higher capacity than 9gb. It also mentioned Sony's Blu-Ray will probably become the preferred choice due to its 54gb capacity - obviously 360 owners will have to make do with disc-swapping...

Back on track then - The report also suggested that Sony would be ditching 1080i on the PS3 and sticking with 720p.

Blue Ray is already faltering although they are using it for PS3. Its heading towards HD-DVD for the common technology in next gen DVD discs.

If it is faltering, I doubt it'll harm the PS3 - Look how many UMDs are available for the PSP now, does anything else use the format?

XBOX 360 im pretty sure does not use HD-DVD it used dual layered DVD's giving the 8.5gig per side ish capacity. HD-DVD is 15 gig per side wheras blue ray is around 25gig (both single layer amounts).

yeah i think they are swaying toward HD-DVD as they can sue similar production methods to make it whereas blue ray (although arguably better) would be more costly to produce

Just so people are not getting too confused (other's that are reading I mean).....

HD-DVD is basically a higher capacity DVD, to allow video in either 720p or 1080i (i.e. Higher resolution etc) to be coded on to a single disc for one film.

The XBOX360 is already able to play Hi-Def video, but on present media would mean a film expands over more than one disc.

So..... don't get confused over all the mention of HD's and Hi-Def's.

Regards,
Shaun.

I know I had tons of trouble trying to find one as I'd phoned around 40 different shops and none of them had them in stock at the weekend.I eventually sourced one from a local Gamestation as they had two on the shelf.Tempted to go back and get the second one and shove it on Ebay now! lol

I think lik-sang are stocking all the cables - I'm just waiting for the s-video lead to come in stock...

Just referring back to HD & Hi-Def - my original comment was that I assumed that the 360 was going to have the ability to be a Hi-Def DVD player, like having the HDMI outputs that appearing on machines nowadays - likely not then eh?

When the wife finds out I'm dead meat, it was one of the excuses I gave for letting me get a 360 was I wouldn't have to replace my aging dvd player as well...

The XBOX360 will play Hi-Def movies, albeit via VGA or Hi-Def component. BUT.... I see no reason why HDMI will not be available via a later lead for the XBOX360 (unless this is technically impossible that is).

Shaun.

They've gone with the "old" style DVD reader, so I doubt it'll read the newer HD versions.

Would like to be proved wrong though.

Me too Jacko! Had the Samsung 26" set for a few months now.. really pleased with it. After seeing PGR3 running on this set at GAME in Canary Wharf today (with a crowd of punters stood around it drooling at the car ****!) I'm wishing more than ever I'd pre-ordered a 360.

Anyone know how the demo pods are connected to the Samsung sets? Is it Component or VGA? Not sure which route to go down when I finally get hold of a 360.. Although VGA would be a faff as I also have my laptop connected this way.

Soft-modded XBox 1 also looks great connected at 480p/720p to the Samsung sets by the way.

They are connected via component cos I got one of the guys in Game in the Trafford Centre to open up one of the displays to see if I could get a model number off the rear of the TV as I fancied one for my 360

There wont be any difference in quality between VGA or Hi-Def Component.

If you have HDMI-in then the 720progressive scan option will always look better than an interlaced 1080... Bear in mind too that very very few sets have a native resolution able to support a 1080 signal so the set will be scaling the 1080x input and displaying it over 768 lines at most (thatll be an interlaced signal at 700+ lines thats been 'scaled', degrading it, rather than a progressive 700+ line picture being displayed at its native resolution).

When you look at it that way, the choice is either a progressive 7xx line picture displayed directly or an interlaced 1xxx line picture thats scaled and degraded and then displayed as a 7xx line picuture...... 720p is almost certainly the better option unless you have a set with a resolution of at least 1080 lines; even then the progressive image will probably look better!
