WTF? Since I turned my pc on this morning the icons for my dvd drive and cd writer drive have both disappeared from the desktop, from the 'My Computer' folder and I can't find them installed in the hardware section of the control panel either! Can anyone offer some advice as to why this may be?

reboot go into bios and see if it picks up the dfives there. If not the ide channel coul d have some how got disabled. Check for an option to see if that is the case. Failing that, open her up and just check the ide cables are still coneccted up, and also the power cables. If both drives are powered by the same power connector then it could be a power issue. have you added extra hardware recently?

Rebooted it a couple of times, went into bios and it wasn't picking them up there either so like you say I may check inside the tower and make sure they are still connected properly. Nope I haven't added any extra hardware at all for a long time, at the moment it just seems to be luck of the draw as to whether or not the computer picks the drives up when it starts windows or not!
