Will a modem cable work on a serial printer port ?

Will a modem cable connect a PC's com port to a printer's serial port ?

Or do I need a null serial cable ?

If memory serves me you need the null serial cable (pins 2 & 3 crossed over (transmit & Receive) & depending on type of handshaking either pins 5 & 20 (DTR/DTS (Hardware)) and/or pins 4 & 7 (XON/XOFF software). On the 25-pin side of things.
